Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-04) recognized Andres Olmedo as the 2025 American Dream Award recipient for Yolo County. Thompson presents the American Dream Award during Immigrant Heritage Month to residents of California’s Fourth District who have come to the United States and made outstanding contributions to our communities.

“Immigrants are our neighbors and colleagues, soldiers and first responders, doctors and lawyers, farmers, entrepreneurs, teachers and so much more. Our nation would not be the powerhouse of the world without their contributions to our country’s history, culture, and economy. This is evidenced by Mr. Olmedo’s work in our community,” Thompson states. “Mr. Olmedo is the perfect example of the American Dream, serving as a model teacher and effective soccer coach. His commitment to his students, players, and our district is clear. I am honored to recognize Andres Olmedo as this year’s Yolo County American Dream Award recipient.”

Andres Olmedo was born in Jocotepec, Mexico and moved to the U.S. in 1986. In 1998, Mr. Olmedo started his teaching career, instructing elementary, middle, and high school students in the Woodland Joint Unified District.

Since then, he has served as an AP World Language Teacher, Girls Varsity Head Soccer Coach, and Boys Junior Varsity Soccer Coach at Woodland High School. He is also the founder and head coach of Woodland Community College Soccer and serves as a college advisor for Davis Legacy Soccer Club.

Mr. Olmedo has led his various soccer teams to local, regional, and state championships. Through his coaching, he has helped many student-athletes receive scholarships to play soccer at schools such as UCLA and Stanford. Even more impressive, under Mr. Olmedo’s leadership, nine out of every ten of his AP World Language students have earned a high enough score on the rigorous AP Exam that qualifies them for college credit.

Congressman Mike Thompson’s American Dream Award honors immigrants who have excelled professionally in entrepreneurship and innovation, in the arts and culture, or in community service.
