MONTEREY >> Local authorities have suspended searches after two people were seen being swept away by sneaker waves last week. On Sunday, there was a report of an individual seen floating in the water but no bodies were found.
On Dec. 23, the Marina Police Department received a report of a person being swept into the water by large waves.
A few hours later the same day, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office received another report of a man being swept off a rock on the 17-Mile Drive near Point Joe, according to a news release. He had also been hit by a sneaker wave.
Sneaker waves are large, unexpected swells that can surge after a series of gentle waves. Searches for the two were unsuccessful, in part due to unsafe weather conditions during that time.
On Dec. 29, the Sheriff’s Office received a call from a local whale watch tour boat that reported seeing what looked like a body floating in the water about 4 miles off the coastline of Marina State Beach. The Coast Guard assisted in a search effort but no body was located, according to the news release.
While active search efforts have been suspended, authorities are encouraging anyone who sees what may look like human remains in the water or coastline call law enforcement with any information.
