SACRAMENTO >> Marina’s unlikely run in the girls basketball playoffs ended with a loss Saturday in the CIF State Divison V championship game.

The Vikings lost to Bret Harte 62-39 at Golden 1 Center.

Getting to the state final was quite an accomplishment for a team that was 6-20 last season, went 0-6 in the Surf League this season and was not in the final Orange County Top 25.

The Vikings got to the state final by winning four CIF Southern California Regional games, including away victories over the division’s No. 1 seed, Gahr, and No. 2 seed, San Pedro.

Marina, which finished the season 21-16, struggled in many areas Saturday. The Vikings committed 22 turnovers in the 32-minute game. They made only 12 of their 42 shots (29 percent), and were outrebounded 47-21, including 21-11 on offensive rebounds.

Still, as Marina senior Mia Grasse explained, the Vikings were grateful for the opportunity to be the only Orange County girls basketball team to play in a state final and to experience playing in a large arena that is the home of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings.

“Despite our loss I’m super happy about how far we’ve come,” she said. “I could not be more proud of my teammates.”

Marina freshman guard Rylee Bradley overcame a difficult start to score a game-high 23 points with five rebounds. In the first half she made only 2 of her 9 shots for seven points.

Vikings senior Tiana To scored 10 points with five rebounds.

Bret Harte senior guard Ariah Fox scored 22 points on 8-for-13 shooting and also had 15 rebounds, including seven offensive rebounds, and four assists.

When Marina went early to a full-court press to try to close the gap, Fox led the Bullfrogs’ press-break effort.

It was the first state final for Marina and Bret Harte (26-7), a public school in Angels Camp, a community in Calaveras County.

Marina got off to a rough start. The Vikings’ first four possessions were two turnovers and two missed shots. They did not get their first point until four minutes into the game, a Kim Nguyen free throw that made it 10-1.

The Vikings would get no closer than five points, 13-8, and it was 15-8 at the end of the first quarter and 32-20 at halftime.

Marina coach Danny Roussel already was looking at the big picture, the success of a team that few could have expected to be the county’s lone representative in the girls state finals.

“Once we got to the playoffs,” he said, “our goal was to win one game, win the next game. I think all season long we focused on just those little small goals, the small steps that ended up being big steps for us. We’re proud of what we were able to do.”

The win over Gahr in the regional playoffs was among Marina’s many outstanding playoff achievements. It had lost to Gahr in the CIF Southern Section Division 5AA semifinals.

All CIF-SS boys and girls basketball semifinalists qualified for the state tournament.
