South Suburban guard Anthony Harris and his teammates went into Thursday's NJCAA Division II national tournament quarterfinal against Niagara County, N.Y., determined to play relentless defense.
“We knew (Niagara County) had 32 turnovers in their last game,” Harris said. “Coach (John) Pigatti was like, ‘Pressure them and they'll throw the ball right to you.' ”
Things went according to plan. The Bulldogs forced 33 turnovers and rolled to a 103-80 win at Danville Area Community College.
Harris finished with 26 points and Shakur Pinder added 17 points and 10 rebounds for South Suburban (23-11), which will take on Louisburg, N.C., or Grand Rapids, Mich., in a semifinal at 8:30 p.m. Friday.
The Bulldogs advanced to the semifinals last season as well, losing to Triton before bouncing back to take third.
“We're two wins away now,” Harris said. “We're just taking everything one game at a time.”
The Bulldogs raced to a 17-6 lead in the first five minutes sparked by Devon Mingo, who scored five points and had three steals in the first three minutes.
“Our guys executed the game plan,” Pigatti said. “Niagara County runs a lot of different intricate stuff offensively. Our kids did a great job adjusting and making the plays defensively.”
The Bulldogs led 54-27 at halftime and cruised from there.
“We knew we couldn't let up in the second half,” Pigatti said. “No lead's ever safe in Danville. We've lost some big leads here before. We wanted to make sure we survived and advanced.”
Rasheide Bell had 14 points and five assists for the Bulldogs. Mingo finished with 11 points and Deante Cisero chipped in 10.
Pigatti is looking for a different outcome in the semifinals this year.
“We've been here before, and it hasn't worked out,” he said. “We've got to try something different this time. I'm going to talk to my staff and figure it out.”
Moraine women stay alive: Taylor McGiles' 3-pointer with 36 seconds to go gave Moraine Valley the lead for good as the Cyclones won 64-59 over Lackawanna, Pa., in a consolation game at the NJCAA Division II national tournament in Harrison, Ark.
McGiles, a Sandburg graduate, hit two big 3s late and finished with eight points.
Andrew product Michelle Borgen had a monster game for the Cyclones (17-18), finishing with 25 points and 24 rebounds. Mother McAuley graduate Erin Drynan added 21 points and 16 rebounds.
Moraine will take on Guilford Tech in a consolation semifinal at 11 a.m. Friday.
After McGiles' 3-pointer made it 61-59, Drynan and Borgen combined to make three free throws to seal the win.
“The team played with a lot of heart and determination,” Moraine coach Delwyn Jones said. “They showed a great deal of resiliency and fought back.”
