Two girls flag football standouts, Scotts Valley High senior Claire Skinner and Aptos senior Izzy Graff, were named co-MVPs of the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League.
Soquel senior Trinity Wilson was named Offensive Player of the Year, and the Knights’ Erik Kirby was named the league’s Coach of the Year by his peers.
Skinner helped the No. 2 seed Falcons (10-2) beat No. 3 Aptos, the league’s defending champion, 12-7 in the SCCAL Tournament championship at Harbor High on Nov. 9.
In league play, Skinner, a 6-foot receiver and linebacker, finished with 11 touchdowns, two of which came on interception returns. On defense, she recorded 13 sacks, two interceptions, seven blocked passes, and 32 flag pulls.
“Claire dominated every game she played on both sides of the ball,” Falcons coach Louie Walters said. “On defense, teams had to change how they ran their offense because she was a force rushing and in coverage. And on offense, teams had to double-team her.”
Graff, a running back and cornerback, led the Mariners in rushing yards (807) and receiving yards (753) and touchdowns (17) on the season. On defense, she had team-high totals in tackles (60 flag pulls) and pick-sixes (four), was second in interceptions (seven), and had 22 deflections.
The second-year captain, also the league’s 2023 MVP, finished with 104 points scored.
“I once heard in an interview that there may be many players on a team, there are few competitors, players who play with all heart, leaving everything on the field,” Mariners coach Denise Russo said. “Izzy is the ultimate competitor with her focus and determination in every play she makes. She has influenced the success of our program and has laid a foundation for our continued growth.”
Three Falcons were named to the first team, junior quarterback Jazzy Phillips and junior Brooklyn Williams, and senior Jazzy Doubek.
Soquel had two players, senior Chloe McGilvray and junior Haley Betterman, named to the first team.
Harbor senior Juliet Ray and Aptos sophomore Ellie Marta rounded out the first team.
