CUPERTINO >> Running back Peyton Hatten rushed for 100-plus yards and hauled in a touchdown reception, but the Cabrillo College football team suffered a 36-9 loss to host De Anza in the teams’ nonconference game Saturday.

Hatten finished with 118 yards rushing on 24 carries, and the Seahawks finished with 357 yards on offense.

Turnovers proved costly for Cabrillo. It fumbled the ball three times and lost two of them, and also threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown. The Mountain Lions (2-0) didn’t commit a turnover.

Seahawks coach Justin Hansen it was more than turnovers that did his team in.

“It was the timing of complementary, or uncomplementary football,” he said. “It was mistakes in every facet getting momentum going in the wrong direction. All fixable.”

Cabrillo (0-2) looks to rebound Saturday at 6 p.m., when it hosts Chabot (1-1) in a nonconference game.

De Anza’s Lamy Constant scored on a 4-yard run and the Mountain Lions made a two-point conversion to go up for good in the first quarter.

Cabrillo got on the board in the second quarter, when Martin Magana-Ramirez booted a 39-yard field goal to narrow the Seahawks deficit to 8-3, but the Mountain Lions’ Akeem Wright hauled in a 9-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Antevious Jackson with 39 seconds left in the half.

Elijah Hadley scored on an 8-yard run and Cameron Scarbrough returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown to help De Anza extend its lead to 29-3 in the third quarter.Hatten hauled in a 19-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Jamari Vaughns early in the fourth quarter, but De Anza responded with a 57-yard touchdown reception from Devin Dawkins to cap scoring with 10 minutes remaining.

Vaughns finished 14-of-35 passing for 136 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also had seven carries for 50 yards.

De Anza had 15 pass breakups and Scarbrough had a pick-six.

Cabrillo’s Rio Cruz had two catches for 40 yards, and Demajae Roberson had three catches for 39 yards.

De Anza finished with 360 yards on offense. Jackson finished 15-of-21 for 188 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Tosin Alade led Cabrillo with 12 tackles, and teammates Alonso Quian and Neo Moreno each had six. The Seahawks didn’t record a sack, but made four tackles for a loss of yards.

Despite suffering the loss, Hansen said there were plenty of positives.

“There were a lot of freshmen who played really good, and sophomores who showed leadership,” the coach said.

Hansen said Michael Thomas, a sophomore defensive tackle out of Marina High, graded out incredibly high.
