Midfielder Daniel Svensson scored in the 36th minute to lead Borussia Dortmund over Ulsan 1-0 on Wednesday at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati and into the knockout round in the FIFA Club World Cup.

After a giveaway by Ulsan on a poor pass near its own goal, Jobe Bellingham centered to Svensson, who took a touch and beat goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo from about 10 yards out.

That was all the German side needed, outclassing its South Korean counterpart. Dortmund had decisive edges in shots, 28-3, and shots on goal, 11-3.

Dortmund won Group F with seven points, two more than Fluminese. Ulsan was last, going 0-3.

Dortmund plays Monterrey on Tuesday.

“The only thing we could have done a little bit better is maybe scoring a bit more goals, because we created a lot of chances today,” Svensson said. “Football is emotional, so yeah, very nice scoring the goal that turned out to be an important one, also. So, yeah, very nice feeling.”

A bright spot for Ulsan was the play of Hyeon-woo, who recorded 10 saves.

“I’m sorry for the fans to not meet their expectations,” he said. “The climate (93 degrees) like this is too harsh. It is not for playing soccer, but it is what it is. So most teams, I mean, not just only us, we don’t feel this kind of weather usually. It is a change of environment.”

Fluminense 0, Mamelodi Sundowns 0: Fluminense held the Mamelodi Sundowns to a scoreless draw in Miami Gardens, Florida, denying the South African club the win it needed to advance to the knockout round.

Fluminense, which only needed the draw to advance, finished second in Group F. It will face Intern Milan on Monday.

The Sundowns, the crowd favorite at Hard Rock Stadium, came out with energy, determined not to see their run in the tournament end. They dominated possession (68%) and made three shots on goal to none for Fluminense.

Fluminense increased the pressure in the second half. Germán Cano nearly scored in the 58th minute, his right-footed shot hitting the post.

“It was a very hard match,” said Fluminense defender Ignacio, the player of the match. “Our opponent had possession of the ball most of the time, but we could block them. And now we are classified (for the next round) and that was our goal.”

Fluminense joins fellow Brazilian clubs Palmeiras, Botafogo and Flamengo in advancing to the knockout round.

Inter Milan 2, River Plate 0: In Seattle, Francesco Pio Esposito scored in the 72nd minute and Alessandro Bastoni added an insurance goal in stoppage time to lead Inter Milan into the knockout round.

Esposito’s goal came just six minutes after River Plate’s Lucas Martínez Quarta was shown a red card after taking out the legs of Henrikh Mkhitaryan on a breakaway and preventing a clean shot on goal.

Bastoni’s goal came on a left-footed shot from outside the box in the 93rd minute.

Inter Milan finished atop Group E with seven points.
