Cardinals: Matt Carpenter is calling it a career. The veteran infielder said on the “Get In The Game” podcast on Wednesday that he’s stepping away following a 14-year career, most of them with the Cardinals. The 39-year-old Carpenter was a three-time All-Star while moving between second, third and first base. Carpenter hit .259 with 179 home runs and 659 RBIs in 1,511 games, the vast majority of them with the Cardinals, who selected him in the 13th round of the 2009 amateur draft following a standout college career at TCU. Carpenter reached the majors in 2011 and was a fixture in the lineup for the next decade. The left-handed hitter led the majors in hits (199), runs (126) and doubles (55) in 2013 while making his first All-Star appearance and helping the Cardinals to the World Series. Carpenter remained with the Cardinals through 2021 before spending a season with the Yankees in 2022, then moving on to the Padres the following season. The Cardinals brought Carpenter back in 2024. He hit .234 with four homers and 15 RBIs in 59 games. “So fortunate that that opportunity came about, (having) the last jersey you put on being the first jersey you put on,” he said.
Guardians: Two-time AL Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber was hired by the Guardians as a special assistant for pitching, rejoining the organization that he played for from 2011-2019 as part of a 13-year career in the majors. He also spent one season apiece with the Rangers, Yankees, Rays and Red Sox. Kluber, 39, compiled a 98-58 record and a 3.16 ERA with 1,461 strikeouts for the Guardians, ranking second in team history with a .628 winning percentage.
Mariners: RHP Bryce Miller was placed on the 15-day IL with right elbow inflammation ahead of Wednesday afternoon’s game against the Yankees. Miller, 26, struggled in May and gave up a combined 11 earned runs over his last two starts spanning nine innings. He’s 2-4 this year with a 5.22 ERA in eight starts. Miller said he has dealt with right elbow issues since the end of the 2024 season, and especially since making his first start in 2025. He said he got a cortisone shot for his right elbow on Tuesday, and had already started to feel better by Wednesday afternoon. Miller is frustrated to land on the IL, especially considering how dominant he was in 2024 while going 12-8 with a 2.94 ERA in 31 starts covering 180 1/3 innings. He’s optimistic he can return to that form with some rest and rehab.
Phillies: Bryce Harper had two hits and drove in the game-winning run, Jesus Luzardo pitched seven strong innings, and the Phillies downed the visiting Cardinals 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday. Harper reached base three times in the game, but it was his bloop, two-out single that capped off a seventh inning rally for the Phillies. Luzardo (4-0) pitched seven innings — matching his season high — and allowed one run on five hits to remain unbeaten this season. He struck out six. Jordan Romano struck out the side in the ninth inning for his fourth save. Jordan Walker drove in the lone run of the game for the Cardinals, who saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end. Erick Fedde started for the Cardinals and didn’t allow a run in 5 2/3 innings.
