William Ervin, of Gary, was three blocks from his home when he was hit by a vehicle in the 600 block of West 35th Avenue around 6 p.m. Sunday, according to Gary Police Department and the Lake County Coroner’s office.
The driver, a 23-year-old man, told police “he did not see the pedestrian on the roadway until it was too late,” police said in a statement. The diver has been cooperative with police officials.
Erivn was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lake County Coroner’s Office. The Lake County Sheriff’s Department will conduct an accident reconstruction, according to a release from the Gary Police.
Police are asking pedestrians to use the sidewalks when available and to cross at designated crosswalks. When walking at night, people should wear bright or reflective clothing while walking at night, officials said.
