Sarah Gibson of Boulder, CO passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on Friday, January 24th.
Born outside of Walla Walla, WA in July 1932, Sarah (or Sally) had a lifelong passion for learning and travel.
Sarah is an alumna of Bryn Mawr College, Whitman College, Northern Illinois University, and the Illinois School of Professional Psychology. With a bachelor's degree in History, Sarah's first profession was as a flight attendant for United Airlines in the 1950's, one of a few professions open to women in that era.
Unable to remain a stewardess after marriage, she became a union leader in the Airline Stewardess Association until she started a family. With her youngest old enough to start school, Sarah re-entered the workforce as the librarian at Mill Street Elementary in Naperville, IL, eventually earning her masters degree in Library Science. Always the consummate academic, she received her PhD in Clinical Psychology in her mid-50s and began her final career in private practice in Burlington, IA until age 70.
An intrepid explorer, Sarah traveled to all 7 continents, visiting Cambodia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Russia, Indonesia, Peru, Ecuador, Argentina, Chile, Belize, India, Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan, China, Turkey, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Tasmania, Kenya, Tanzania, and throughout North America and Europe.
Preceded in death by her parents Margaret and Gerald Gibson and siblings Jerry, Jean, and Celia, Sarah's memory is kept alive by her siblings Jon and Karen, daughter Annette Bale, daughter and son-in-law Renee Depew and Dave Irwin, son and daughter-in-law John and Lisa Depew, and grandchildren Ben, Muli, Noah, Josh, and Connor.
A Celebration of Life is being held Saturday, February 1st at Frasier Meadows Assisted Living from 2-4pm. In lieu of flowers, the family invites friends and loved ones to make a donation to their local National Public Radio (NPR) station in support of Sarah's life-long commitment to education and the open sharing of ideas.
