OAKLAND — A 36-year-old man was killed in an East Oakland shooting Wednesday night and two others were wounded in an unrelated shootout that happened not far away about an hour earlier, authorities said Thursday.
The man killed, whose name has not yet been released, was shot after getting into a dispute of some kind with another person.
The shooting happened about 9:35 p.m. Wednesday in the 1700 block of 28th Avenue in a residential neighborhood between International Boulevard and Foothill Boulevard.
The wounded man was taken to a hospital where he died a short time later. A suspect was still being sought Thursday morning.
The killing is the 60th homicide investigated by Oakland police this year. Last year at this time, police had investigated 76 homicides in the city.
Police were also investigating another East Oakland shooting that happened about 8:20 p.m. Wednesday that left two men wounded, one critically.
According to initial police reports, a 32-year-old man was sitting in a vehicle in the 2000 block of 27th Avenue when a 35-year-old man walked up and started shooting at him. The man in the car was critically wounded.
Police said another person in the car got out and shot back, wounding the 35-year-old gunman.
The person who fired back was gone when police got there.
The 32-year-old was taken by ambulance to a hospital, and the 35-year-old man got his own ride to a hospital where he was placed under arrest on suspicion of assault with a firearm.
Police are trying to determine if the wounded men knew each and what motivated the shooting.
Although unrelated, the two Wednesday night shootings happened a few blocks apart.
