BUZZARDS BAY >> After witnessing sister Holly win a state championship just two days prior, Matt Panttila started having visions of grandeur.
On Saturday, the junior attackman made his own statement. Panttila sniped four goals as third-seeded Norwell upended a longtime foe in No. 1 Cohasset to claim the Div. 4 boys lacrosse championship, 11-6.
“It’s amazing,” Panttila said. “It’s been a tough, competitive matchup every single time we’ve played them. When we faced them earlier in the season, we didn’t come out on top. But it feels really good to come back. It’s a great feeling.”
It was the third state championship in four seasons for Norwell, and its first at the Div. 4 level. Typically known for having high-flying offenses, the South Shore League rivals felt things out for the game’s opening minutes. Then, Norwell (17-6) came to life behind Jake McGuirk. The junior attackman netted a pair of goals in the first quarter, helping the Clippers construct a 3-0 lead.
“I think they come to practice wanting to win another state title,” Norwell coach Josh Stolp said about his group. “Maybe it’s a little greedy, but that’s just how it is.”
But Cohasset (21-3) battled. Tim Donovan scored a goal with 59 seconds left in the first, before Max Monahan opened the second frame with a snipe as the Skippers trimmed their deficit to 3-2.
Norwell struck for back-to-back goals in the latter stages of the stanza, as Panttila potted two in a row, before Gus Greene beat the buzzer with a last-second shot for Cohasset as the foes entered the break in a 5-3 contest.
Once the second half began, though, Norwell found a second gear. McGuirk and Teddy Glynn buried a pair of goals early in the third quarter as the Clippers built a 7-3 edge.
After Cohasset chipped it to a 7-5 contest off shots from Donovan and Shane Mulcahy, the Clippers put things out of reach. Oliver ‘Ollie’ Rice netted a goal, before Panttila found himself with possession in the final minute of the third. The junior knifed through traffic, and decided to take a shot himself with nowhere else to turn. The attempt whistled home as he was leveled, and the attackman celebrated with a snow angel motion on the turf as his team built a 9-5 lead. From that point forward, the Clippers coasted to history.
Donovan paced Cohasset with a pair of goals.
The win gave Norwell a clean sweep of the Div. 4 lacrosse titles, boys and girls. It’s just an added bonus that both wins came against Cohasset, the school’s biggest rival.
“My sister is on the team,” Panttila said. “She was really excited to play them in the championship. They also lost to them in the regular season, but they came back. It was an amazing game. I was there, our team was there, we were all watching it. It just feels good. We’ve got a long story with Cohasset.”
