The Southfield Police Department has released details on the alleged carjacking of a Door Dash delivery driver reportedly robbed of his vehicle at gunpoint by two Detroit teenagers who then led officers on a high-speed chase into Detroit.
Derek Butler, 18, is charged with carjacking, carrying a concealed weapon, fleeing/eluding police and felony firearms. His alleged accomplice’s name hasn’t been released. He’s 17 and held in Oakland County Children’s Village, charged with carjacking and carrying a concealed weapon.
According to police, it unfolded on April 12 outside The Lakes Apartments on 12 Mile Road, where officers responded at around 4:40 a.m. on a report of an armed carjacking by two masked suspects. Stolen was a silver 2023 Dodge Charger.
Southfield patrol officers on M10 saw the Charger pass by at speeds in excess of 125 MPH and began pursuing it. As the police chase continued along M10 into Detroit, the driver — later identified as 18-year-old Derek Butler — intentionally turned off the vehicle’s headlights and taillights, officials said.
Butler continued to drive recklessly and continued onto the Davison Freeway, swerving through traffic and, at one point, drove on the roadway’s shoulder, police said.
Southfield officers used a PIT (Precision Immobilization Technique) maneuver, causing the stolen Dodge Charger to swerve, drive up an embankment and spin 180 degrees before becoming disabled, police said.
Butler and the other teen were then taken into custody. When arrested, both were wearing masks as described by the carjacking victim, police said. A loaded Glock 9mm “ghost” handgun and the victim’s wallet were found in the vehicle, police said.
As an investigation continues, police are working to identify a driver of a Jeep Grand Cherokee seen traveling ahead of the Charger and then split away, just before the pursuit began. It’s believed the two vehicles were involved in a coordinated effort, police said. The Cherokee is believed to have been stolen from Detroit last Thursday. It was last seen near the Southfield Freeway near Eight Mile Road, police said.
Butler is held in the Oakland County Jail with bond set at $250,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 28 for a probable cause conference.
The alleged carjacking comes just a few weeks after another major crime-related incident involving a Door Dash delivery driver was reported in Oakland County. On March 9, a Door Dasher was fatally shot in Ferndale — believed to be a road rage altercation turned deadly. Mamadou Diallo, 26, was killed near Woodward Avenue just north of Eight Mile Road. Terrell Simms, 39, of Oak Park is accused in the slaying.
