Not many things remain the same after a year.
One thing that does, however, is the unrivaled recent consistency of the Woodland Christian baseball program, which just punched a ticket for its second CIF Sac-Joaquin Section championship game in a row, following a 14-2 road win over Colfax Wednesday, capping off a tidy two-game series sweep in the Division 6 semifinals.
The Cardinals (25-6, 14-0 Sierra Delta League) came into the second game of the series following a close-as-nails 5-3 game one win, highlighted by senior pitcher Wyatt Traffican coming in to slam the door shut in relief for the final two-plus innings while also picking up a huge RBI at the plate.
Wednesday’s game started out the same for the first four innings, before the Cardinals ripped off a back-breaking eight runs in the top of the fifth, to take a 10-2 lead they would not look back from as they cruised to a 12-2 win.
Junior Jayden Badhesha and Traffican were lights out from the mound, with Badhesha pitching 4 innings, allowing only 3 hits, a single run, and collecting 5 strikeouts. Traffican pitched the final 3 innings and was once again dominant, striking out 5 as well, but only allowing 1 hit and 1 run.
At the plate, junior Jordan Villanueva had a banner day, leading the way for the Cardinals with game-highs in RBI (4), hits (4) and runs scored (3). Jayden Badhesha was also prolific from the batter’s box, picking up 4 hits, 3 RBI and a run scored.
Senior Parker Howald had 2 hits, 2 runs and 2 RBI while Gary Mann had 2 hits and an RBI. Jeffrey Nannini 1 hit, 1 run and an RBI, while fellow senior Jandro Torres had a run, 3 hits and an RBI. Ethan Howald had a run while sophomore Billy Flowers scored 3 runs.
With the win, the Cardinals have now made back-to-back CIF Sac-Joaquin Section championship games, winning the D7 championship last year thanks to an emphatic 12-2 win over Valley Christian.
The D6 final will be played on any day between Tuesday, May 20, and Friday, May 23, and will be against the winner of the other semifinal matchup on Thursday between the No. 1-seeded Bear River or the No. 5-seeded Amador. The results of that game were not yet available by the time of print.
