Stop me if you have heard this before: The Woodland Christian girls basketball team won a home league game.

No, don’t stop me. Otherwise, there would be no story. But even after a move to a different and more competitive league, the wins keep coming.

On Tuesday night at Jack Hamlin Gym, the Cardinals (8-5, 2-0 Sierra Delta League) opened their home league slate in style, blazing past visiting Lindhurst 48-22.

“Yesterday (Monday night) was just full of emotion, but tonight (Tuesday night), we felt we had to really buckle down since it was a league opponent,” Cardinals head coach Shiloh Sorbello said. “We didn’t know what to expect, given this was a new league, so I think we were really trying to feel things out. We know we have to hold ourselves to a high standard because we have high expectations for ourselves. I think this is a good wake-up call for us in terms of needing to maintain that high quality even if the opponent isn’t at our level. We played well through the third quarter, but I think we got a bit lazy in the fourth quarter.”

The Blazers (9-5, 0-2 SDL) came into the matchup in pretty good form, having won seven out of their last eight. They rode a seven-game winning streak into their SDL opener against Rio Vista this past Friday but fell 53-50.The Cardinals came into the matchup in scintillating form. They had won five straight, including three tournament wins, a 46-29 league opener on the road against Vacaville Christian, and an emotional 53-39 victory over their same-side-of-town rivals, Pioneer High School, on Monday night.

During the game Monday in front of a raucous and local crowd, four-year varsity stud Tegan Hayes crossed an essential item off her senior year bucket list when she scored her 1000th point.

From an impact sixth man off the bench her freshman year to a full-fledged starter a year later during her sophomore campaign, Hayes’ consistency and availability throughout all four years of high school allowed her to reach the milestone.

“Monday night was a huge accomplishment for Teagan,” Sorbello said. “It’s just a testament to her perseverance in accepting whatever role she has. She has increasingly grown in her leadership and responsibility to our team. She hasn’t ever been the primary scorer for us, but she has never been hurt, played in every game, and the points add up. The milestone snuck up on us.”

There must be something in the water at Woodland Christian in terms of 1,000-point scorers, as star junior Romello Bruhn reached the milestone last season in an 82-59 victory against Encina Prep.

The Cardinals flew out to a near-perfect start, going up 11-2 with just over two minutes left in the first quarter. Back-to-back 3s from Elena Ganyo and Hayes made it 17-2 to end the first.

Siena Sorbello kicked off the quarter with a basket to make it 19-2 before fellow sophomore Bailee Broward lined up an open shot from deep to make it 22-2. The Blazers managed to get their second basket of the game and avoid a second-quarter shutout on a tough basket inside to make it 22-4.

After a few minutes without a basket, the Cardinals star transfer from Pioneer High School, Keziah Maldonado-Lemus, drove to the basket for a bucket and foul to make it 25-4. A single free throw from Broward and another 3-pointer from Ganyo made it 29-4.

With under a minute left in the half, Cardinals freshman Tyler Johns drained a shot to go up a seemingly insurmountable 31-4 at the half.

Hayes led off the scoring for the Cardinals in the second half with an opening basket to take the night’s first 30-point lead.

Even after trading a few baskets and the Blazers enjoying a consistent flow of buckets for the first time on the night, the score remained out of hand at 40-9 with just over a minute left to play in the quarter.

Ganyo, who scored 10 points on the night, drove to the basket and drained a teardrop at the buzzer to make it 42-9 going into the fourth. With the game’s result out of the question, the Cardinals managed to end the night with a nice 48-22 win.

Broward led the way for the Cardinals with 13 points to go with her 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Hayes enjoyed a fine night, scoring 10 points to go with her 2 rebounds and 2 assists. Maldonado-Lemus only had 3 points but led the Cardinal’s offense, collecting a game-high 4 assists. Sorbello chipped in with 6 points and 5 rebounds.

The Cardinals will next have a few days of practice and another league home game against Highlands, set for Friday at 6 p.m. The following week, they will play three games in total: two road league games against Golden Sierra and San Juan on Tuesday and Friday, respectively, sandwiched between a semi-local road matchup against Winters High School, which is set for Thursday.

“I see us having the potential to win out the rest of our games,” Sorbello said. “I really have a lot of confidence in our team, and we will keep getting better. We just have to take care of business, stay healthy, hold ourselves to the level we can play to, and not worry about who we are playing.”
