The Seattle Seahawks have found the replacement for recently traded quarterback Geno Smith, agreeing to a three-year, $100.5 million contract with Sam Darnold, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Monday.
The person said $55 million of the contract is guaranteed. Darnold will earn $37.5 million in 2025.
The 27-year-old Darnold had a breakthrough 2024 season in his only year in Minnesota, throwing for 4,319 yards and 35 touchdowns while posting a 102.5 passer rating and leading the Vikings to 14 wins.
Darnold was drafted third overall by the New York Jets in 2018 out of USC, but struggled mightily during three seasons with the Jets and two with Carolina.
After spending the 2023 season as a backup withb the 49ers, Darnold finally played to his potential for most of the 2024 season.
But Darnold ended his season by posting back-to-back duds in his final two games: a Week 18 game against Detroit for the No. 1 seed in the NFC and a wild-card loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Darnold went 18 for 41 for 166 yards and no TDs in a 31-9 loss to the Lions in Week 18 and then threw for 245 yards and had two turnovers the next week in a 27-9 loss to the Rams.
His performance in those key games contributed to the decision by the Vikings to let Darnold hit the open market and turn the team over to J.J. McCarthy, who was drafted 10th overall last season.
• The Jets and former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields have agreed to a two-year contract worth $40 million.
Fields steps in as New York’s starter for Aaron Rodgers after the Jets announced last month they are moving forward without the four-time NFL MVP after two seasons.
The Fields deal includes $30 million guaranteed.
Fields, 26, spent last season with the Steelers after playing his first three NFL seasons with the Chicago Bears, who drafted him with the 11th overall pick in 2021.
He has passed for 7,780 yards and 45 TDs with 31 interceptions in 50 games, including 44 starts in four seasons. He has rushed for 19 scores.
• Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is staying with the Los Angeles Rams to back up Matthew Stafford on a one-year contract that includes a base salary of $4,505,000 and $9 million in incentives.
The 33-year-old Garoppolo is 43-21 as a starter with the Patriots, 49ers, Raiders and Rams. He started one game last season.
Garoppolo led the 49ers to the Super Bowl after the 2020 season and the NFC title game two years later.
• The Cleveland Browns are acquiring quarterback Kenny Pickett from the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.
The Eagles will receive quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson and a fifth-round pick in next month’s draft.
Pickett, a first-round pick by the Steelers in 2022, started one game last season for the Eagles while backing up Jalen Hurts. He was 14-10 as a starter in two years for Pittsburgh.
The Browns, who have the No. 2 overall pick in the draft, may not have Deshaun Watson for most of the season after he ruptured his Achilles tendon for the second time in three months.
Former Stanford QB Tanner McKee will likely be Hurts’ backup next season.
• The Miami Dolphins are bringing in former Jets first-round pick Zach Wilson on a one-year deal to back up quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
The deal will pay Wilson $6 million guaranteed.
Wilson, drafted by New York second overall in 2021, spent last season as a backup in Denver and did not play a snap.
He was the Jets’ starter for much of his three seasons in New York but failed to live up to the lofty expectations.
Wilson went 12-21 as a starter with 6,293 yards and 23 touchdowns passing before being benched in 2023.
• The Buffalo Bills agreed to a three-year, $36 million contract with former Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Joshua Palmer.
He spent his first four NFL seasons with the Chargers and compiled 182 catches for 2,287 yards and 10 touchdowns.
• The Washington Commanders agreed to terms with free agent defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw and acquired offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil in a trade with the Houston Texans.
The Commanders are sending 2025 third- and seventh- round picks and 2026 second- and fourth-round picks to Houston for the five-time Pro Bowl selection and a fourth-rounder this year.
Kinlaw’s deal is worth $45 million over the next three seasons, with $30 million guaranteed.
• Wide receiver Chris Godwin is staying in Tampa Bay and two-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Haason Reddick is joining the Buccaneers.
Godwin, who is returning from a gruesome ankle injury, is getting a three-year $66 million deal, including $44 million guaranteed.
Reddick is getting $14 million for one year. Before a holdout ruined his 2024 season with the New York Jets, Reddick had 27 sacks in two seasons in Philadelphia.
The 29-year-old Godwin had 50 catches for 576 yards and five touchdowns in just seven games last season.
