ALASKA >> Fremont resident Marc Ricketts and his son, Colin, headed off to icier climes in July. While the Bay Area broiled, the Rickets were exploring glaciers — including the Root Glacier, pictured — at Wrangell-St. Elias National Park in Alaska. “We were on a guided glacier hike with St. Elias Alpine Guides,” Marc says, “and they also supplied the absolutely necessary crampons for our boots to make it possible to walk on ice.”

TRAVEL TIPS >> “Every piece of advice I saw regarding Alaska weather used the words ‘layers’ and ‘rain.’ These were appropriate words,” Marc says. “Make sure your rental car agency will allow their vehicles on the 60-mile gravel McCarthy Road, if you plan to drive into the park; most of the major (rental agencies) do not permit it.”
