An inmate was reportedly killed during an incident at the Monterey County Jail on Sunday.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the inmate’s death and withholding the name until the family is notified.

Deputies responded to a “disturbance” in one of the jail housing units just after 6 a.m. Sunday. When they entered, they found one inmate who had apparently been assaulted by another according to the Sheriff’s Office. Emergency aid was administered and the victim was transported to Natividad Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

The suspect has been identified as 38-year-old Saul Espinoza from Palmdale. He was serving a sentence for vehicle theft with priors, providing false information to a peace officer, and possession of stolen property.

“The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division is conducting a comprehensive criminal investigation of the victim’s death. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Coroner’s Division of the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office to assist in determining the victim’s cause and manner of death,” read a press release from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office that was issued Sunday.

Additional charges against Espinoza are pending as the investigation remains active and ongoing.
