The Oroville Police Department arrested a man suspected of a car-to-car shooting on Tuesday near Bridge Street and Oroville Quincy Highway, according to a news release Wednesday afternoon.
Officers arrested the man, Jermaine Walls, after searching the area around 1 p.m. near Morningstar Avenue, locating him based on a description given to police, according to the report.
An investigation says the shooting is suspected to be a result of a fight involving kids, and that after the fight, Walls allegedly retrieved a gun from his car and fired multiple rounds at another car.
According to the release, officers detained Walls and others at gunpoint, and after his arrest, they served a search warrant on his car to find ammunition, extended magazines and two guns; one of the guns is suspected of being stolen.
Walls was arrested on suspicion of firing a gun with gross negligence, firing a gun from a car at another person, illegal possession of guns and manufacturing a large-capacity magazine.
Republican leader
State Assemblyman James Gallagher (R-East Nicolaus) will be ending tenure as the leader of the Assembly Republican Caucus effective Sept. 16, and to fill the role, Assemblyman Heath Flora (R-Ripon) will step in as the new leader, according to a news release Wednesday by the caucus.
Gallagher stated in the release that he is stepping down from the role, and that it was his decision.
He acknowledged that Republicans picked up seats in the Assembly despite a predicted drop in seats, and that they won “big fights” on issues including fentanyl human trafficking and Prop 36.
The press release stated that under Gallagher’s leadership, state Assembly Republicans “expanded their ranks, flipped seats once considered unwinnable, and forced overdue debates on crime, affordability, and government accountability.”
“Both Gallagher and Flora stressed the importance of unity moving forward, with a clear mission: to bring real solutions to Sacramento and earn back the trust of Californians who’ve been ignored for too long.”
Arson arrest
In the 18th arson arrest of 2025 in Butte County, a man suspected of igniting a vegetation fire Monday near Thompson Flat Cemetery and Cherokee roads has been taken into custody by Cal Fire-Butte County law enforcement officers, according to a news release Wednesday.
The Cemetery Fire, which burned to about 9.5 acres of grass and bush, was determined by investigators involving multiple separate ignition points, according to release said.
Witness descriptions led to officers identifying Joseph Paul Garlington Sr., of Oroville, who was found during a traffic stop on the same evening of the fire. Officers searched his vehicle and found suspected evidence linking him to the fire, along with meth and drug paraphernalia.
Garlington was booked into Butte County Jail on suspicion of arson to wildland, health and safety violations; and two more counts of arson with bail set at $75,000.
