Fresh from releasing her first two holiday singles, singer Katie Kadan is preparing for her first Christmas concert at Uptown Social in Michigan City.
Katie Kadan Holiday Show on Dec. 17 is led by the namesake, who placed third on Season 17 of NBC’s “The Voice, and features The Kadan Sisters and special guest Mama Kadan.
“I’m going to sing with a jazz three-piece. We’re gonna bring back a lot of the old Christmas songs from the jazz era, the 1950s and some 1960s,” said Katie Kadan, who will be backed by Chicago musicians Ben Waltzer (piano), Dennis Carroll (upright bass) and Greg Artry (drums).
“I’m so excited. This is going to be my first jazzy kind of show. I’ve always loved jazz. I grew up listening to Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday and thought that was glamorous Christmas music. I just wanted to sing the songs that I love singing,” said Kadan, who released her self-titled debut album in 2019.
“I’m going to play piano on one or two songs at my show but it’s going to be nice to step away and let these brilliant jazz musicians go so I can shake it and have fun and connect with the audience.”
The family-friendly event marks a return to Uptown Social after she performed there in June with her mother, Kathleen Kadan of Summit, Illinois; her uncle Raymond Bleth of Northwest Indiana; and her cousin Jacob Raymond of Orland Park, Illinois.
Katie Kadan’s sisters Hollie Chambers of Northwest Indiana and Sarah Kadan of the Western suburbs of Chicago and brother Mark Kadan from New York sang backup at that summer gig.
“I’m going to sing all my favorite classics,” said Katie Kadan about the return engagement.
“My sister Sarah has been a teacher for over 20 years and is such a talented storyteller so she’s going to tell a special story for kids to listen to.
“There’s going to be a Christmas singalong where everybody sings together. There’s word on the street that somebody from the North Pole is going to make a visit but you never know. He’s a busy guy.”
Katie Kadan’s schedule picked up after she appeared in 2019 on “The Voice,” which featured “Baby I Love You” as her blind audition on the Season 17 premiere and the song “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” and the holiday duet “Merry Christmas Baby” with her coach John Legend as her finalist performances.
“‘The Voice’ was unreal. I didn’t want to be on the show because I hate competition but being a singer is a hard job especially when you don’t grow up in the business or know much about it. It’s hard to cross over and it feels very defeating,” said Katie Kadan, who is classically trained in piano and voice.
“I decided to do ‘The Voice.’ They talked me into it. It was a perfect time in my life. I was ready for it. I wasn’t afraid of it. I thought, ‘It’s an opportunity given.’ I had so much fun. I learned a lot.”
The resident of the Western suburbs of Chicago added that she enjoyed working with the Team Legend leader.
She added that performing “Without You” was her favorite memory from “The Voice.”
Katie Kadan’s first foray into holiday recordings was being featured on Johnny Reid’s “My Kind of Christmas,” a new version of his 2019 song, which was rerecorded as a duet and released Nov. 4.
“He’s a country artist in Canada and my mentor over COVID, just learning the business and everything. He’s taken me under his wing. He’s a good family man and a great artist who likes to share and spread the art of other artists,” said Katie Kadan, who began singing at age 3.
She also collaborated with Ricky Duran, runner-up on Season 17 of “The Voice,” to release a holiday single featuring Blue Light Bandits on Nov. 25.
“We came out with a remake of Donny Hathaway’s ‘This Christmas,’ ” said Katie Kadan, who also is featured with Sarah Potenza on Eureka O’Hara’s single “Big Mawma,” which dropped on Nov. 18.
Katie Kadan, who cited her 2020 sold-out House of Blues Chicago show as one of her coolest moments, said her Uptown Social concert offers the opportunity for people to take a break.
“Sometimes we’re so worried about presents and making sure everything’s done. Take a moment to soak up the Christmas energy and spend time with your family,” said Katie Kadan, who is also a Special Olympics Illinois ambassador.
“It’s great to have memories of being in a room where live music is happening and where the hearts are good and the Christmas vibes are right.”
