Civil unrest has rocked Los Angeles over the past few days.
Immigration enforcement activity prompted protests in Downtown Los Angeles, Compton and Paramount.
This included a raid on Friday at a Westlake-area Home Depot in which day laborers were taken in.
Vehicles have been set ablaze, the 101 Freeway was temporarily shut down, and both tear gas and less-than-lethal rounds have been fired at demonstrators.
President Donald Trump called in the National Guard, saying it was necessary to maintain some order.
“We made a great decision in sending the National Guard to deal with the violent, instigated riots in California,” Trump said in a Truth Social post. “If we had not done so, Los Angeles would have been completely obliterated.”
In turn, California has sued the Trump administration for the deployment of the National Guard, arguing that the deployment actually made things worse by “inflaming tensions,” as Gov. Gavin Newsom put it.
“President Trump’s order calling (for) federalized National Guard troops into Los Angeles — over the objections of the governor and local law enforcement — is unnecessary and counterproductive,” said California Attorney General Rob Bonta.
Meanwhile, in response to all of this, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said, “As a mayor of a proud city of immigrants, who contribute to our city in so many ways, I am deeply angered by what has taken place. These tactics sow terror in our communities and disrupt basic principles of safety in our city.”
Which brings us to our Question of the Week: What do you think about all of this?
Is the Trump administration right to be conducting immigration raids here?
Should the Trump administration be arresting day laborers? Or is that a sign of poor prioritization?
Did the deployment of the National Guard seem appropriate? Or did it just make things worse?
Should local law enforcement cooperate with ICE?
What is the sensible way forward?
