Kurtis Rourke threw two first-half touchdown passes and No. 8 Indiana’s defense held up long enough to give the Hoosiers a record-breaking 20-15 victory over longtime nemesis Michigan on Saturday.
Rourke was 17 of 28 with 206 yards as the Hoosiers (10-0, 7-0 Big Ten), college football’s losingest program, beat college football’s winningest program, Michigan, for just the second time since 1988 and earned the first 10-win season in Indiana history.
The Wolverines (5-5, 3-4) produced their lowest point total in this series since a 14-10 loss to Indiana in 1987. Davis Warren was 16 of 32 with 137 yards through the air, but Michigan rushed for just 69 yards.
Indiana took control when Rourke hooked up with Omar Cooper Jr. on a 7-yard TD pass late in the first quarter then followed that score with a 36-yard TD pass to Elijah Sarratt early in the second quarter to make it 14-3.
The Hoosiers added a 40-yard field goal late in the first half and Michigan added two second-half field goals — a 22-yarder after picking off Rourke at the Indiana 7-yard line and a 56-yarder that cut the deficit to 17-9 late in the third quarter.
It was Dominic Zvada’s fifth field goal of 50 or more yards this season.
Michigan had a chance to tie the score after Kalel Mullings converted a fourth-and-goal into a 1-yard scoring plunge with 9:35 remaining, but Warren’s 2-point conversion trickled through a defender’s hands and out the back of the end zone.
Michigan got one more chance after an Indiana field goal, but the Wolverines turned the ball over on downs.
No. 1 Oregon 39, Maryland 18 >> Dillon Gabriel broke the NCAA record for total career touchdowns and top-ranked Oregon remained undefeated with a victory over Maryland.
Gabriel threw for 183 yards and three touchdowns for the Ducks (10-0, 7-0 Big Ten), who were No. 1 in the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season announced earlier this week. It was Oregon’s 14th straight win at home.
Gabriel’s pass 3-yard scoring pass to Gernorris Wilson early in the second half gave him 179 total touchdowns, breaking Case Keenum’s record of 178 (155 passes, 23 rushes) at Houston from 2007-11. Gabriel added another TD pass before the night was over.
Billy Edwards Jr. threw for 206 yards and a touchdown for Maryland (4-5, 1-5 Big Ten), which was coming off a bye after a demoralizing 48-23 loss to Minnesota. The Terrapins have lost five of their last six games.
No. 3 Ohio State 45, Purdue 0 >> Will Howard threw three touchdown passes and rushed for another score, Jeremiah Smith broke the Ohio State freshman receiving record with his ninth touchdown of the season and the No. 3 Buckeyes rolled over Purdue.
Smith’s 17-yard TD on a crossing route late in the first half broke the tie with Cris Carter, who had eight in 1984. Smith finished with six catches for 87 yards.
Smith now also owns the freshman school records for receptions (45) and receiving yards (765).
Howard also threw touchdown passes to Gee Scott Jr. and Emeka Egbuka. He was 21 for 26 for 260 yards and ran in a 1-yard touchdown on fourth down to open the scoring for the Buckeyes (8-1, 5-1 Big Ten, CFP No. 2).
The season of woe continues for Purdue (1-8, 0-6), which lost its eighth game in a row, the longest losing streak since they dropped 10 straight in 2013.
Hudson Card had 108 passing yards and threw an interception for Purdue. It’s the second time in the last three games that Purdue has been shut out.
UCLA 20, Iowa 17; late Friday >> T.J. Harden had his first 100-yard rushing game of the season and Ethan Garbers threw two touchdown passes as the Bruins rallied for a victory on Friday night.
Carson Schwesinger had a pair of interceptions to help UCLA win its third straight.
Harden had 125 yards on 20 carries, the fourth time the junior has eclipsed the century mark in his career.
Iowa’s Kaleb Johnson, who was averaging 142.1 rushing yards per game, had a season-low 49 yards on 18 carries.
