The Boston Red Sox traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday in a deal that could shake up pennant races on both coasts.
The Giants sent right-hander Jordan Hicks, lefty Kyle Harrison, outfield prospect James Tibbs III and minor league righty Jose Bello to the Red Sox for the 28-year-old designated hitter, who had bristled at his demotion from third base this year.
A three-time All-Star who signed a 10-year, $313.5 million contract with the Red Sox in 2023, Devers is batting .272 with 15 homers and 58 RBIs in 73 games, including a solo shot in Boston’s 2-0 victory over the New York Yankees on Sunday that completed a three-game sweep.
But his relationship with the team began to deteriorate when the team signed Gold Glove third baseman Alex Bregman during spring training and asked Devers to move to DH; he balked before agreeing to the switch.
When first baseman Triston Casas sustained a season-ending knee injury, the Red Sox approached Devers about playing the field and he declined, saying the front office “ should do their jobs ” and look for another player.
Ohtani could pitch soon; Sasaki out longer period
Shohei Ohtani could return to a major league mound in the next two weeks but Los Angeles Dodgers rookie right-hander Roki Sasaki has paused his throwing program and is set for a lengthy layoff.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Ohtani will throw to hitters for a fourth time this week and “potentially” it could be the two-way star’s final batting practice session before his first big league pitching appearance since Aug. 23, 2023, for the Los Angeles Angels.
“He’s getting very eager, very excited,” Roberts said. “And I think there’s a point where, in kind of hearing from Shohei, that the effort it takes to throw live BP and then to play a game, (that we’d rather) use those bullets in a game.”
A three-time MVP, Ohtani entered Sunday’s game with a .290 average, an NL-leading 1.023 OPS and 25 homers.
With Sasaki (right shoulder impingement), Blake Snell (left shoulder inflammation) and Tyler Glasnow (right shoulder inflammation) on the injured list, the Dodgers have resorted to bullpen games.
Sasaki has not pitched in a game since May 9 and is not part of the team’s long-term pitching plans this season.
Padres’ Merrill goes to IL with concussion
The San Diego Padres have placed All-Star outfielder Jackson Merrill on the seven-day injured list on Sunday, a day after he suffered a concussion during Saturday night’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Merrill was injured in the seventh inning when he attempted a stolen base, but was tagged out by Arizona second baseman Ketel Marte. The tag came on Merrill’s helmet as he slid head first and he was down for several minutes before walking off the field.
Saints drop series finale in Indianapolis
Indianapolis’ Victory Field has been a house of horrors for the St. Paul Saints and it continued this week, ending with a 7-3 loss to the Indians on Sunday.
St. Paul lost six of the seven games in the series this past week. The Saints had lost eight straight games in Indianapolis entering the series.
On Sunday, the Indians scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure the victory.
Ryan Jensen (2-4) took the loss for St. Paul after giving up four runs in relief.
Noah Cardenas homered for the Saints.

Magic acquire Bane from Grizzlies for players, picks
The Orlando Magic wanted to find scoring and shooting this summer. Desmond Bane was their answer, and the first big move of the NBA summer — before the NBA summer even officially begins — has arrived.
The Magic acquired Bane from Memphis on Sunday in a deal that sends Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony and four first-round draft picks to the Grizzlies — one this year, another in 2026, then others in 2028 and 2030. The deal also included the option for a pick swap in 2029.
Bane averaged 19.2 points this season for the Grizzlies, plus he connected on 39% of his shots from 3-point range. He would figure to be an upgrade for a Magic team that has made the playoffs in each of the last two seasons — going out in the first round both years — but has sought more shooting to pair with star forwards Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner.
