A Batavia man is accused of keeping a woman in the basement against her will after a neighbor reported seeing a man carrying a screaming woman back into a home, Batavia police said.

Rogelio R. Ybarra, 34, of the 1200 block of North Washington Avenue, was charged with felony aggravated domestic battery and unlawful restraint Thursday, Batavia police said in a news release. The woman and Ybarra are family household members, police said.

Police were dispatched to the home around 7:18 a.m. Thursday after a neighbor called police and said he saw a woman screaming and struggling to get away from a man outside the home, officials said. Upon arrival, police contacted the woman at the doorway and she was able to leave the home. An older woman was also found in the home and was assisted in leaving the house.

Police said Ybarra barricaded himself in the house and would not comply with police orders to show himself. The roadway in front of the house was shut down and neighboring residents were asked to shelter in place.

Kane County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched and deployed robots, drones and a canine to try and locate Ybarra. He was later found him in the basement and taken into custody without incident, police said.

After an investigation, the woman reported being held in the basement against her will and said she was able to temporarily escape and tried to flee, police said. She said Ybarra caught her in the driveway and pulled her back into the house, according to police.

The woman said she was battered repeatedly throughout the incident, and was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
