The San Dimas boys basketball team remained calm despite a barrage of 3-pointers in the first half by Providence of Burbank.

The Saints also kept their cool when Providence built a nine-point lead in the third quarter. And they kept collected when having to defend against one last shot while holding a one-point lead.

San Dimas never wavered under all that pressure and hung on for a 65-64 win in overtime over Providence in the CIF Southern Section Division 3A quarterfinals Tuesday night.

San Dimas (19-11) will be home in Friday’s semifinal against Norte Vista.

The Saints were led by senior Nathan Yearout, who scored a game-high 28 points. But it was fellow senior Luke Chavez who hit the game-winning shot with 14 seconds left in overtime.

It happened when San Dimas was trailing 64-63. Junior guard Andrew Diep was dribbling on the left wing behind the 3-point line when he saw Chavez open under the basket on the right side. He fired a pass to Chavez who then hit the layup.

“It feels amazing,” Chavez said about the win and his game-winning shot. “We’ve been working all this time. It’s a surreal feeling.”

“That’s something we’ve done all year,” Diep added. “(Chavez) is always there. He’s always in the right spots to get an easy layup and I always know when to find him.”

Diep added 10 points and sophomore Jeremiah Garzon scored 12 while grabbing eight rebounds.

OAK PARK 55, LOS ALTOS 45: The Eagles made 13 of 17 free throws in the fourth quarter to build a lead big enough to beat Los Altos.

Los Altos was led by Kevin Keshishyan’s 24 points. Turnovers hurt Oak Park’s chances of gaining a sizable lead in the third quarter and Keshishyan made a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to tie the game at 39-all and set up a competitive fourth frame.

SAN GABRIEL ACADEMY 66, CAPISTRANO VALLEY CHRISTIAN 51: The Eagles (16-12) are back in the semifinals for the second straight year. They will be at Sage Hill on Friday for the semifinals.

Mahamadou Diop finished with a double-double to lead SGA, scoring 19 points with 13 rebounds. Mamadou Traore added 15 points with eight rebounds and Sean Palmer scored 15 points to go with eight rebounds. Mohamed Touré had seven points and 11 rebounds.

DIVISION 4AA

ELSINORE 62, ROWLAND 55: The Tigers outlasted the tight defense of Rowland to advance to the semifinals, snapping Rowland’s 10-game win streak.

Despite not having a player taller than 6-foot-2 on the roster, the Raiders (21-9) consistently clogged passing lanes, challenged every shot and competed for every rebound to claw back from a 13-0 hole to open the game and eventually grabbed a short-lived 26-24 lead just before halftime.

“Our GPA may be greater than our height,” joked Rowland coach Jason Villanueva before the contest.

Senior Charlton Kanginian was the catalyst for the Valle Vista League champions, scoring 10 of his team-high 18 points before the break. Mikael De Leon chipped in a dozen points.

SANTIAGO 66, WORKMAN 65: The Workman boys basketball team was closing in on its first appearance in the semifinals in more than 20 years Tuesday night.

It held a three-point halftime lead over Santiago of Garden Grove in the Division 4AA quarterfinals.

But Santiago’s Jorden De La Mora had other plans.

De La Mora scored 30 of his game-high 36 points in the second half, and Santiago’s defense didn’t allow Workman to get off a potential winning or tying shot in the final seconds to hold on for victory.

Workman head coach Martin Flores had no regrets over the way his team played.

“It’s a tough loss,” Flores said. “In games like this, you have to give props to both teams. It could’ve gone either way. We played with six guys tonight. They were physical, they were big and they pushed (us). We missed a few (shots) because of fatigue.”

The Lobos’ star duo of Aron Hernandez and Alex Munoz had their fingerprints all over the game. Munoz notched a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Hernandez ended with a team-high 28 points on 10-for-19 shooting, including 3 of 4 from behind the arc. He added five steals.
