Rams wide receiver Demarcus Robinson was arrested in the early morning hours Monday on suspicion of DUI, California Highway Patrol said.

At 5:13 a.m. Monday, hours after the Rams’ Sunday night loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Highway Patrol officers observed a white Dodge sedan traveling in excess of 100 mph on the northbound 101 Freeway in Woodland Hills.

“Officers observed objective signs and symptoms of alcohol impairment and Robinson was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence,” CHP said in a news release. “Robinson was cited and released to a responsible party.”

Rams head coach Sean McVay said he was made aware of Robinson’s arrest Monday afternoon. He said he spoke with Robinson, and the team is in the process of gathering information about the incident. The Rams also informed the NFL about the incident, and the league will go about its own investigation of the arrest.

“I do believe that Demarcus has a good heart and never would have any ill intentions and clearly there was a decision that’s not in alignment with the things we want to be about,” McVay said. “I know he was remorseful about that. ... I am grateful that nobody was injured or harmed in the process of this.”

Asked about the speed at which Robinson was allegedly driving, McVay said, “Always have safety and decision-making in mind and that certainly is concerning.”

McVay said he had not made a decision about whether Robinson would play Sunday against the New Orleans Saints, but expects to have enough information at his disposal to make a determination before he next speaks with reporters today.

“I want to understand all the facts that are involved,” McVay said. “You want to demonstrate grace while also understanding of the severity and seriousness of what could have occurred, especially if it relates to affecting yourself or anybody else in a negative way when those things take place. So I want to make sure that I’m gathering all the appropriate information and then answer your question accordingly.”

McVay said the Rams do have resources available such as driving services for players who find themselves in a situation in which they should not be behind the wheel of a car, and that players are informed about those resources during the onboarding process at the beginning of each season.

Robinson, in his second season with the Rams, has 26 catches for 384 yards and six touchdowns this season.

Higbee expected to return to practice after ACL tear

Rams tight end Tyler Higbee is expected to return to practice this week after offseason knee surgery, McVay said on Tuesday.

Higbee tore his ACL in the Rams’ playoff loss to the Detroit Lions in January and underwent surgery to repair the injury. He has missed all 11 of the Rams’ games this year, but has slowly been making progress with the medical staff on the sidelines rehabbing his injury while still being a vocal leader in the locker room.

Higbee, 31, has spent his entire eight-year career with the Rams. Last season, he caught 47 passes for 495 yards and two touchdowns.

McVay said Higbee isn’t expected to return to play this week against the Saints.

“He has made amazing progress, I think we want to get him out on the practice field,” McVay said. “He provides such a great leadership, such a great spark for us in a variety of ways. I don’t know that this week would be the week that he would return, but for him to even be back on the practice field and starting his clock, it’s a real credit to him, to our medical staff and just the overall resolve and resilience of that individual who I have a lot of love and respect for.”
