New Year’s Eve Safety Zone set for downtown

The Santa Cruz Police Department will be enacting a Safety Enhancement Zone designation in the downtown corridor, beginning at 8 a.m. on Tuesday and ending at 8 a.m. on Wednesday. The Safety Enhancement Zone enforces a “triple fine” levied for certain municipal code violations, such as possessing alcoholic beverages in public and other behaviors deemed unsafe or illegal. Police will be actively present in the downtown corridor, enforcing laws to minimize problems and ensure a safe evening for the community.

New Year’s jug band sing and play-along

Everyone is invited to come to a free New Year’s-themed Sing and Play-Along with the Trolley Drops Jug Band at Pono Hawaiian Grill, 120 Union St., on Thursday Jan. 2, from 5:45 to 7:30 p.m.

The songs will be hokum blues, folk jazz and novelty tunes from the ’20s and ’30s. It will be a party! There are five Trolley Drops with birthdays between Dec. 20 and Jan. 10. Is your birthday too darn close to the holidays too? Never get a good party? Let the band know, to give you special recognition and celebrate with you!

Chord and lyric charts will be passed out at the meeting. Bring your ukes, jugs, kazoos, washboards, guitars, fiddles, etc. and your good humor. Plan to buy dinner and have a drink and support Pono for hosting the party. Lots of parking nearby. It’s fun and it’s free. Full bar, Hawaiian barbecue and more will be available.

Free PG&E gas safety checks

To help customers stay safe, PG&E is offering free in-home gas safety checks and will re-light pilot lights for customers with heaters or other appliances that were turned off during the warmer months. Free safety checks help ensure that gas appliances, including water heaters, furnaces and ovens, are operating safely and efficiently, reducing the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning within the home. Carbon monoxide is especially dangerous because it can’t be seen, smelled or heard.

Soroptimist club to meet Jan. 14

Soroptimist International of Capitola-by-the-Sea will hold its club meeting on Jan. 14 at 4 p.m. at United Way of Santa Cruz County, 4450 Capitola Road, Suite 106. Candidates and winners of the 2025 Live Your Dream awards will be announced, plans for the March 8 awards ceremony will be developed and the results of the Holiday Beyond the Cash Awards will be shared.

Soroptimist International of Capitola-by-the-Sea is a global volunteer organization that provides women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment. Soroptimist is a coined Latin phrase meaning “best for women.” The meeting is free and open to the public. The Rio Theatre announces ‘She Adventures Film Tour’

The “She Adventures Film Tour” is back for another year, returning to celebrate and honor adventure women around the world, starting at 7 p.m. on Jan. 25 at the Rio Theatre, 1205 Soquel Ave. Join for a celebration of the inspiring women of the adventure world. This unique film event promises to captivate audiences with a carefully curated selection of short films that highlight the strength, courage and passion of women in the outdoor world. Distinguished Artists series announce concerts

The Distinguished Artists Concert and Lecture Series continue its 39th season, with Reveron Piano Trio, performing music by Latin American composers Teresa Carreno, Astor Piazzolla, Gabriela Frank and Ricardo Lorenz.

Senior Outreach offers peer-counselor training

Senior Outreach, a program of Family Service Agency of the Central Coast, is offering its 30-hour peer-counselor training to Santa Cruz County residents, 55 and older, on the following dates: Jan. 14, 16, 17, 21, 23 and 24. Volunteers will learn valuable active listening and counseling skills, along with community resources available to seniors, in order to offer support to homebound seniors as they face aging challenges and life transitions. You will experience personal growth, supervision, and the camaraderie of other peer-counselors throughout your tenure. Mount Madonna School to put on musical

Mount Madonna School invites you to “The Addams Family, A New Musical,” a delightfully dark and comedic tale of two families: the straight-laced midwestern Beinekes and the graveyard-dwelling Addams. Performances are on Jan. 25 and 26 at 2 p.m. at Mount Madonna School’s Hawks’ Nest Theater, 445 Summit Road.
