Four teams from the Boulder, Broomfield and Longmont areas remain alive in the high school football postseason.
Erie, Fairview, Broomfield and Mead advanced to the quarterfinals round in their respective brackets. Frederick, Monarch and Holy Family were eliminated last week.
Here is a look at where things stand for each of them.
No. 7 Fairview
Last week: Beat No. 10 Chatfield, 42-15.
Up next: No. 2 Mountain Vista at Halftime Help Stadium in Highlands Ranch on Friday at 7 p.m.
What to know: The Knights had little trouble in their second-round home game against Chatfield on Friday as they won a playoff game for the first time since 2019 to move to 11-0 on the season.
Their toughest test of the season awaits in Mountain Vista (11-0), which is outscoring teams on average, 55-7, this season.
To pull off the upset, the Knights will need to have an answer for Golden Eagles quarterback Austyn Modrzewski, who’s thrown for 52 TDs this season.
No. 9 Erie
Last week: Beat No. 8 Pine Creek, 28-23.
Up next: No. 1 Cherry Creek at the Stutler Bowl in Greenwood Village on Friday at 7 p.m.
What to know: It’s already been a successful first season in 5A for the Tigers (10-2) as they’ve proven their merit in the state’s largest classification after winning the 4A title a year ago.
Last week they got long touchdown runs in the second half from running back Braylon Toliver and quarterback Ronin Ward to beat Pine Creek at District 20 Stadium in Colorado Springs. This week, it’s Cherry Creek.
Yes, that Cherry Creek.
The Bruins are the most decorated big-program football school in the state as their 13 titles are only behind small-school Limon’s 22. They’ve reached the 5A finals every year since 2018, winning four of the last five 5A championships.
No. 5 Broomfield
Last week: Beat No. 12 Vista Ridge, 49-7.
Up next: No. 4 Palmer Ridge at Don Breese Stadium in Monument on Friday at 7 p.m.
What to know: Mikhail Benner scored three touchdowns in the opening half as the Eagles (10-1) blitzed the Wolves in the second round.
Second-year coach Robert O’Brien has Broomfield rolling on both sides of the ball heading into the quarterfinals. Since a 13-3 loss to 5A No. 9 Erie on Sept. 27, the Eagles have outscored their last six opponents by an average of 48-4.
In Palmer Ridge (10-1), they face a team that also hasn’t had much trouble over the past two months. Since a Sept. 27 loss to 4A No. 7 Mesa Ridge, the Bears have won five of their past six games by at least three touchdowns.
No. 10 Monarch
Last week: Lost to No. 7 Mesa Ridge, 34-31.
Up next: The offseason.
What to know: The Coyotes’ first season under coach Jeff Santee was a major success. The Coyotes were a few minutes away from heading to the quarterfinals before a late rally from Mesa Ridge sunk them.
Senior Riley Montemayor threw for 16 touchdowns and ran in another eight this season for Monarch (9-3), which won the 4A North 1 League title before beating Bear Creek in the opening round.
No. 15 Frederick
Last week: Lost to No. 2 Montrose, 44-22.
Up next: The offseason.
What to know: Frederick (8-4) shined in its move up to 4A, beating Northfield in a snowy first-round game before falling to Montrose (11-0).
Senior quarterback Gavin Ishmael’s decorated career comes to a close. Ahead of the loss to Montrose, he had more than 4,000 total yards and 40 TDs this season. That gave him around 8,000 yards and 94 TDs in his career.
No. 2 Mead
Last week: Beat No. 15 Pueblo South, 30-7.
Up next: No. 7 Pueblo Central at Mead High School on Saturday at 1 p.m.
What to know: The Mavericks are 9-1 this season. Their only loss came to No. 6 Windsor earlier this month, a game in which they had a chance to win things with the ball inside the 10 in the final seconds.
Against Pueblo South in the opening round, Ethan Elmore ran for 153 yards and two touchdowns. Ryan St. Aubin added 73 yards on the ground and another score.
Another Pueblo school is next. The Wildcats have won four straight and beat No. 10 Lutheran, 36-34 in the opening round. In it, Amari Brown had 325 rushing yards and three TDs as the team ran for a total of 515.
No. 16 Holy Family
Last week: Lost to No. 1 Thompson Valley, 38-14.
Up next: The offseason.
What to know: The 3A defending champs (6-5) couldn’t keep up with the No. 1 team in the classification in the opening round.
It put an end to a nice season for first-year quarterback Monte Samaras, who finished with 14 passing TDs and 15 on the ground. The senior threw for two interceptions against Thompson Valley, but he also ran for 113 yards and a score and caught another TD from freshman Kaden Hopkin.
