




Cheyenne Owen had two hits, including a solo home run, and the San Lorenzo Valley High softball team edged visiting Soquel 5-4 in the teams’ Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League game on Thursday.
The Cougars finished with nine hits and drew four walks.
SLV coach Mark Brown said the early season rain has made it tough for the players to find their groove, but noted that progress is being made.
“The kids are starting to play well together,” he said.
Senior Angie Fulkerson also had two hits, one RBI, and a run scored for SLV. She also drew a walk. Senior Abi Krepelka doubled, drove in one run, and scored a run. Freshman Elie Colby had two hits and scored a run. Junior Ray Alvarez had a hit and RBI.
Cougars sophomore starting pitcher Grace Purtscher struck out five batters over four scoreless innings and earned the win.
Kailana Torres had four hits, including two doubles, one RBI, and a run scored for the Knights. Eliza Stevens had three hits, one RBI, and scored a run. Ellie Howell had a hit and two RBI, and Evelyn Eslit-McDow drew three walks and scored a run.
On Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., SLV hosts Aptos while Soquel plays at Santa Cruz.
At Scotts Valley 7, Aptos 2 >> Gracie Delgado hit two solo home runs, and Taylor Wilson had four hits, including her team leading fourth home run, in the Falcons’ SCCAL win Thursday.
Jazzy Doubek had two hits and on RBI for the Falcons (7-3, 1-0).
Winning pitcher Sofie Seese gave up six hits and two runs in her complete-game outing. She struck out three batters and didn’t issue a walk.
Santa Cruz 10, at Harbor 0; 6 inn. >> Winning pitcher Rona Lewis recorded nine strikeouts and a walk over three innings in the Cardinals’ SCCAL win Thursday.
Poppy Coursey had two hits, one RBI, and scored twice. Ellia Dunton and Tezdyn Medina-Mates each had two hits, one RBI, and a run scored. Lewis had two hits and an RBI. Leah Serna had a hit and scored twice, and Amaris Gonzalez scored twice. Lucia Curley had a hit and two RBI. Molly Pisciotta also drove in a pair of runs.
On Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., Santa Cruz hosts Soquel while Harbor hosts Scotts Valley.
At Carmel 7, Monte Vista Christian 6 >> The Mustangs gave up three runs in the bottom of the seventh and suffered the Pacific Coast Athletic League Mission Division loss Thursday.
Junior Juliana Lopez had two hits and two RBI to pace the Mustangs (4-6, 0-3). Ava Alvarado doubled, drove in a run, and scored a run.
MVC hosts Aptos on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and Presentation of San Jose at 1 p.m.
Boys tennis
At Aptos 5, Scotts Valley 2 >> Tyler Thomas and George Jertberg won their singles matches in straight sets, and the Mariners won their SCCAL match Thursday.
Eli Diamond and Aditya Hannon won singles matches for the Falcons in straight sets.
Aptos’ Isaiah Ackerman and Nami Banks, and Dylan Wood and Kal Bhugra earned doubles win.
The Falcons forfeited No. 3 doubles.
Santa Cruz 6, at Harbor 1 >> Cole Williams and Otis Delaselva earned singles wins in straight sets, and the Cardinals topped the short-handed Pirates in the teams’ SCCAL match Thursday.
Abraham Bachar rallied past Oscar Sapunor 2-6, 6-2, 10-7 in a third-set tiebreaker for Harbor’s lone win.
The Pirates forfeited four matches.
Boys golf
At SLV 186, Santa Cruz 201 >> The Cougars’ James Dahlen and the Cardinals’ Tobin McClendon each shot 2-over-par 33 and were co-medalists in the teams’ SCCAL match at Boulder Creek Golf & Country Club on Thursday.
Keenan Buntz (35), Garret Dahlen (39), Luke Fontinell (39) and Tanner Brewer (40) also scored for the victorius Cougars (3-0).
Cliff Chesnut (37), Sam Wickens (39), Braden Brooks (44), and Roman Minasian (48) also scored for the Cardinals (2-1).
On Tuesday at DeLaveaga Golf Course, SLV takes on host Harbor and Santa Cruz hosts Aptos.
Aptos 201, at Soquel 224 >> Ben Norwark shot 3-over-par 37 for medalist honors, and the Mariners won their SCCAL match at DeLaveaga on Thursday.
Colby Culbertson (39), Leland Blankenship (40), Nick Bjorn (41), and Will Bartch (44) also scored for the victorious Mariners.
Mateo Aldolfo (41), Riley Shank (45), Cole Christensen (45), West Waddell (46), and Peter Robberloth (47) scored for the Knights.
Scotts Valley 230, Harbor 235 >> The Pirates’ Kaden Dunton shot 37 for medalist honors, but the Falcons secured the SCCAL match win at DeLaveaga on Thursday.
Seamus Drees (38), Brogan Beasley (44), Zane Siechen (45), Adrian Creamer (49) and Gavin Doherty (54) scored for the Falcons (1-2).
Kyler Sample (41), Gunther Kruegar (44), Jake Locknane (56), and Niko Marinovik (57) also scored for the Pirates (0-3).

At Santa Cruz 3, Scotts Valley 0 >> The host Cardinals (6-0) earned a 25-9, 25-16, 25-12 sweep in SCCAL play Thursday.
Senior middle Otto Palma had eight blocks and two kills for the Falcons. Senior middle Flavio Aiudicii made four blocks, and senior defensive specialist Neo Ciotti made two digs and two passes.
College baseball
Gavilan 8, at Cabrillo 2 >> Jacob Fiorenza had a hit, three stolen bases, and scored twice in the Seahawks’ Coast Conference South Division loss Thursday.
The Seahawks finished with five hits and Kaiden Hoapili drew the team’s lone walk.
Losing pitcher Anthony Sullivan gave up five runs, three earned, over 5 2/3 innings. Wyatt Barton earned a complete-game win.
Cabrillo (10-14, 3-2) plays at Gavilan (7-18, 2-3) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
High school baseball
St. Francis 7, at Soledad 0 >> The Sharks exploded for five runs in the third inning to take a 6-0 lead and rolled to the PCAL Gablian Division win on Thursday.
Soledad was limited to five hits and three walks.

At Alvarez 12, Watsonville 2; 6 inn. >> Rudy Valdez had two hits, including a double, and scored a run in the Wildcatz’s nonleague loss Thursday.

West Valley 12, at Cabrillo 3 >> Brisea Rivera, Yoselin Bringas, and Danielle Keller each had a hit and run scored in the Seahawks’ Coast Conference loss Thursday.
Morgan DeVillires, Kiana Perreira, and Madi Tara each had one RBI.
Watsonville alumna Rylee Gomez had three hits, including a two-run home run, one walk, five RBI, and scored a run for the Vikings (28-1, 5-0).
Freshman pitcher Amelia Sizemore, an SLV alumna, pitched three innings and earned the win.

At Santa Cruz 77, Harbor 28 >> Juniors Kaden Steel and Seb Williams each won two individual events in the Cardinals’ SCCAL dual meet win Thursday.
Steel took first in the 110 hurdles (21.08) and 300 hurdles (49.25), and Williams took first in the shot put (39 feet, 6 inches) and discus (99-3).
Pirates senior Luke Wyland took first in the 200 (23.74) and 400 (52.39). He also teamed with Charlie Cross, Fausto Gonzalez, and Hudson Coffey for the win in the 4×100 relay (46.71).
The Cardinals also earned wins from senior Eli Fitchen-Young (1,600, 4:21.63), sophomores Angelo Myer (100, 11.55), Nico Van Der Meer (800, 2:08.78), Amadeo Dorsey (pole vault, 8-0) and Grayson Parker (long jump, 16-8), and freshman Colt Busenhart (high jump, 5-2).
SCCAL tri-meet >> The host Knights beat Scotts Valley 61-54 and Mount Madonna 95-18, and Scotts Valley beat Mount Madonna 73-17 on Thursday.
Knights senior Logan Walters took first in the 100 (11.28) and long jump (19-8). He also teamed with Tyler Harway, Tomas Church, and Django Diallak to win the 4×100 relay (44.10).
Soquel senior Kevin Baskerville took first in the shot put (31-9) and discus (105-4).
Scotts Valley senior William Shilling took first in the 200 (23.19) and Mount Madonna junior Eli Moody took first in the triple jump (32-10).
At Aptos 122, SLV 13 >> Senior Brett Swertfager took first in the 200 (24.61), 400 (55.66) and teamed with Bryce Hoops, Ethan Henry and Ryder Yamaguchi for the win in the 4×400 relay (4:07.82) in the Mariners’ SCCAL meet Thursday.
Senior Casey MacConnell took first in the high jump (6-2), long jump (21-9), and teamed with Damian Suchil, Deric Moren, and Scott Catesi for the win in the 4×100 relay (44.08).
Mariners senior Colin Dagnall took first in the 1,600 (4:58.22) and 3,200 (12:54.75). Senior teammate Logan Brantley took first in the shot put (53-7) and discus (157-10).
Girls track and field
At Santa Cruz 62, Harbor 34 >> Sophomore Joy Roberts took first in the 100 (12.92) and 200 (27.40), and the Cardinals won their SCCAL dual meet Thursday. She also teamed with Francesca Garces, Joy Hilldale, and Amelia Palm to win the 4×100 relay (51.79).
Cardinals freshman Haisley Flanagan took first in the 100 hurdles (17.99), discus (65-9) and long jump (15-6).
Santa Cruz also earned wins from seniors Amelia Palm (400, 1:04.61) and Heidi Green (1,600, 5:28.70), and freshmen Isla Roake (800, 2:35.78).
Harbor earned wins from senior Karmalynn Claussen-Sadeh (shot put, 17-8), sophomore Cecile Novembre (high jump (4-10), and freshman Liahona Lefrandt (300 hurdles, 54.96).
SCCAL tri-meet >> The host Knights beat Scotts Valley 76-27 and Mount Madonna 75-23 in their SCAL tri-meet Thursday and the Falcons and Hawks earned a 31-31 tie.
Mount Madonna senior Lagi Hunnicutt took first in the 100 (13.80), long jump (15-5), and triple jump (31-9).
Soquel junior Summer Shields took first in the shot put (25-1) and discus (84-2), and Scotts Valley junior Ava Decleve took first in the 200 (26.40).
At Aptos 83, SLV 49 >> Bella Hartnett took first in the 100 (12.71), 200 (26.19) and teamed with Siena Black, Ella Boyes, and Izzy Graff for the win in the 4×100 relay (51.20) in the Mariners’ SCCAL meet win Thursday.
Mariners sophomore Ellie Marta took first in the shot put (26-5) and discus (97-8).
