Do you want to get out and do something fun? Look no further. Here are five interesting things to do this weekend — from a West Marin sand sculpture contest to a popular Parisian-inspired market in San Rafael.

Music legend

When filmmaker Barbara McVeigh met José Neto, a talented guitarist who has shared the stage with singer Harry Belafonte and English rock star Steve Winwood, through a friend at Green Gulch Farm Zen Center in Muir Beach, she didn’t know too much about him. But as time went on, she began to unravel more about the man and his music, seeing him perform with Winwood and getting to know him more when he started to teach guitar lessons for her daughter.

“This guy is all about uplifting other people,” she told the IJ in 2019. “He’s not about himself, and I saw that on the stage with Winwood. I thought he needs to be recognized, that he has a message to share with the world today about dropping the ego and sharing the values of kindness, generosity and humility.”

The result is “The Man Behind the White Guitar,” a documentary she helped produce which sheds more light on the Brazilian-born musician.

Come see a screening of the documentary, as well as a performance by Neto and a conversation between him and Performing Stars of Marin founder and Marin resident Felecia Gaston, at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Smith Rafael Film Center at 1118 Fourth St. in San Rafael. Admission is $8.50 to $14; the evening will benefit Performing Stars of Marin.

Beachy fun

What do an alligator, a lounging mermaid and intricate castles have in common? These are some of the creative creations that have been made over the years for the Sand Sculpture Contest at Drakes Beach. Come make something — using only what you can find on the beach — or enjoy watching what people come up with on Saturday. Admission is free to both participants and spectators.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. at Kenneth C. Patrick Visitor Center at 1 Drake Beach Road in Inverness, followed by judging at noon. For more information, go to nps.gov.

Rev it up

Get a wonderful blast from the past — and look to the future — at the Corte Madera Lions EV and Classic Car Show from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the overflow lot next to Nordstrom at the Village at Corte Madera. The event, presented by the Corte Madera Lions Club, will feature classic cars, vintage motorcycles, live music by Marin band Bubba’s Taxi, electric vehicles and more.Admission is free. Cultural experience

In the early 1970s, West Marin resident Ernesto Sanchez jumped in a pickup truck with a group of Bolinas residents and headed to Mexico to perform street theater there. His life-changing experiences there, as well as his upbringing as a Mexican American growing up in Southern California, would in part inspire his artistic practice.

“My father was Mexican, a culture with a strong belief in miracles and the spiritual. These forces, beliefs, help guide me in my work,” he told the IJ in 2021.

An exhibit of his work can be seen as part of El Festival de Artes Latinas from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the San Geronimo Valley Community Center at 6350 Sir Francis Drake Blvd. in San Geronimo.

The festival, produced by the West Marin Promotores, will also feature dance, live music, crafts, food and more.

Admission is free. For more information, go to svgcc.org.

To market

Antiques, jewelry, furniture and books, oh my! You never know what trinkets and treasures you’ll stumble across at the French Market Marin’s outdoor antique market.

The monthly event features more than 140 booths of goodies, French music and food and drinks. Stroll and see what you’ll find from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at The Armory parking lot No. 2 on Civic Center Drive in San Rafael.

“I wanted to bring the ambience of the French flea markets in Paris to Marin,” Mill Valley resident Fern Loiacono, the producer and founder of the French Market Marin, told the IJ in 2022.

Admission is free. For more information, go to thefrenchmarketmarin.com.
