A day after Morant again used his aiming-a-gun gesture to celebrate making 3-pointers, the Grizzlies’ star was fined $75,000 by the league Friday. It’s the second time this week that Morant — who was suspended twice in 2023 for incidents with actual weapons — heard from the league about mimicking the act of using a gun during a game.
The league called the gesture “inappropriate,” adding that “Morant was previously warned by the league office that this gesture could be interpreted in a negative light.”
The first interaction with the league office resulted in that warning, after Morant and Golden State’s Buddy Hield made the gesture at one another during a Grizzlies-Warriors game on Tuesday. The warning from the league office was evidently ignored, since Morant made similar gestures in Thursday’s game against Miami.
Morant and other members of the Grizzlies have used the gun gesture numerous times this season. On Thursday, Morant made a 3-pointer in the first quarter of that game, then turned toward the Memphis bench with his left arm fully extended, his right thumb pointed in the air and his index and middle fingers pressed together.
Celtics 123, Suns 103: Jaylen Brown scored 31 points and hit three 3-pointers and host Boston broke the NBA record for 3-pointers in a season in a victory over Phoenix on Friday.
The Celtics were 14 of 39 from 3-point range to push their season total to 1,370. Golden State held the previous record with 1,363 in 2022-23.
Devin Booker led the Suns with 37 points.
Cavaliers 114, Spurs 113: Donovan Mitchell scored 26 points, Evan Mobley added 25 points and 10 rebounds and visiting Cleveland held on to beat San Antonio to move a game away from clinching the best record in the Eastern Conference.
The Cavaliers are a win or a Boston loss from clinching the East’s best record.
Devin Vassell had 24 points to lead the Spurs.
Pistons 117, Raptors 105: Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 23 points, Jalen Duran had 21 points and 18 rebounds and visiting Detroit beat Toronto to wrap up its first playoff berth since 2018-19. The Pistons won a franchise-worst 14 games last season.
Rockets 125, Thunder 111: Jalen Green had 34 points, Alperen Sengun added 31 and host Houston snapped Oklahoma City’s 11-game winning streak with a victory.
Jalen Williams led the Thunder with 33 points and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 22 to reach 20 points for the 70th straight game.
Warriors 118, Nuggets 104: Steph Curry scored 36 points and host Golden State beat Denver for its fifth straight win. The Warriors pulled within a half-game of the Nuggets, who began play third in the Western Conference but fell to fourth with the Lakers’ win over New Orleans.
Nikola Jokic had 33 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists for the Nuggets.
