


Tessa Janecke scored the game-winner as the United States prevailed in overtime over defending champion Canada 4-3 to win the women’s ice hockey world championship on Sunday.
Janecke struck with 2:54 left in overtime for the Americans to claim the 11th title at the worlds.
Abbey Murphy and Taylor Heise scored a goal and had an assist, and Caroline Harvey also scored for the U.S.
“Shock and awe,” U.S. goalie Gwyneth Philips said after the drama.
“I’m ecstatic.”
The U.S. cruised through the tournament, winning the preliminary group with four wins from four, including a 2-1 win over Canada.
Then the U.S. eliminated Germany in the quarterfinals and Finland in the semifinals.
The 12-day, 10-nation tournament in the southern Czech city of Ceske Budejovice represented the final major international tune-up before the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.
Golf: Wu Ashun overcame a four-shot deficit to win the China Open for the second time. The 39-year-old from China made five birdies on the back nine for a final-round 4-under 67 and one-shot victory over England’s Jordan Smith for his fifth European tour title.
NFL: Saints former All-Pro RT Ryan Ramczyk retired. Ramczyk, 30, sat out last season because of a lingering knee injury.
NHL: Nathan MacKinnon had a part in both of the Avalanche’s goals in the second period before adding an empty-netter late as the visitors beat the Stars 5-1 in Game 1 of their first-round Western Conference playoff series. MacKinnon scored on a power play in the second period after assisting on a goal by Artturi Lehkonen.
Soccer: USWNT forward Trinity Rodman is taking time away from the Washington Spirit because of back issues. The NWSL announced on Saturday night that the 22-year-old will be sidelined indefinitely.
