Doug Kranwinkle passed away Tuesday morning in the company of his loving wife and daughter at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, California. His warm and generous heart simply wore out and could pump no more.
Doug loved his family and put them at the center of his life. He and Susan Warren met on a blind date on Valentine’s Day 1959 and married in Wichita, Kansas the following year. He described Susan as the love of his life.
Doug was born in Elgin, Illinois in 1940. He graduated from Northwestern University and University of Michigan Law School. He went on to clerk for Chief Justice Earl Warren in 1967 and shortly after moved to Pasadena to join Munger, Tolles, Hills and Rickershauser where he soon became a partner. He later moved to O’Melveny and Myers, eventually becoming Managing Partner. In 2000, he left private practice to take on the role of General Counsel at Univision Communication -a position he described as the most fun job he ever had. Doug loved Pasadena –in-no small part because, as he and Susan would both remind you, one never has to shovel snow in Southern California the way they do in Kansas and Illinois! He dedicated himself to the One Arroyo Foundation and in 2016 he was delighted to be appointed to the Board of the Rose Bowl Operating Company and to be associated with the “granddaddy of them all”.
From Allendale Park to the Rose Bowl, Doug loved his sports. He was an avid Laker fan but no team gave him more pleasure than the Dodgers. Gratefully, they won the last World Series he watched.
Doug is survived by his wife, Susan; son Mark; daughter, Jane Pine; son-in law, Dave Pine; and daughter-in-law Sara Kranwinkle; grandchildren, Anna, Tommy, Peter and Rose Kranwinkle and Kevin and Jack Pine; and his beloved dog, Percy.
Their memories of Doug sustain them and inspire them to be generous of heart and to look for the best in everyone they meet.
