In the first local clash of Major League Cricket’s two teams that call California home, the San Francisco Unicorns continued their unblemished start to the season with a 219 / 8-187 win over the Los Angeles Knight Riders on Saturday at the Oakland Coliseum.

Jake Fraser-McGurk led another scoring explosion from the Unicorns with 88 runs and 11 6s — the cricket equivilent to a home run in baseball — both team highs, while Finn Allen contributed 52 runs and four 6s. San Francisco set MLC records with its 269 total runs and 123-run margin of victory in its season-opener Thursday.

The Unicorns (2-0) conclude their first-ever set of home matches today at 6 p.m. against MI New York (0-1).

South Africa won the World Test Championship against titleholder Australia by five wickets after knocking off the last 69 runs required on the fourth morning of the final on Saturday.

The Proteas achieved their first major cricket title in 27 years, sparking celebrations at Lord’s.

They moved from a portentous 213-2 overnight to 282-5, the second-highest successful run chase in the 141-year test history at the home of cricket.

Australia didn’t give up the WTC mace easily, relentlessly attacking the stumps and pressuring a South Africa side with an infamous history of blowing winning positions on big ICC stages.

But South Africa was staunch and composed, losing only three wickets on Saturday. The desperate Australians used up all of their three reviews in vain within the first 90 minutes but fought to the end.

Aiden Markram was the colossus Australia could not topple until it was too late.

The opener resumed the day on 102 and was out for 136 when only six more runs were needed. He spent six hours, 23 minutes in the middle.

Tennis

Madison Keys was stunned in straight sets by 37-year-old qualifier Tatjana Maria in the Queen’s Club semifinals on Saturday.

Maria, a German mother of two, beat Keys 6-3, 7-6 (3) for her first career victory in four meetings with the reigning Australian Open champion.

She is the oldest singles finalist on the WTA Tour since 2020, when Serena Williams won the Auckland Classic at age 38.

“You always have to keep going. You never can stop; it doesn’t matter how it goes,” she said. “I love to play tennis, I love this sport, and we live for these special moments.”

No. 86 Maria, a former Wimbledon semifinalist, toppled No. 8 Keys, who hit 10 aces but failed to get a break.

Keys, the No. 2 seed, exited with the No. 1, Zheng Qinwen, who lost to No. 8 Amanda Anisimova of the U.S. 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Emma Raducanu will miss next week’s Berlin Open because of a back problem, as she tries to get ready for Wimbledon.

The 37th-ranked Raducanu has been dealing with the back issue since before the French Open last month. She took an off-court medical timeout during her quarterfinal loss at Queen’s Club to Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen on Friday.

Nine of the top 10 women’s players are set to compete in Berlin, a grass-court event players use to prepare for Wimbledon, which starts on June 30.

College Track and field

Emilia Sjostrand fell just short of her own San Jose State record in the triple jump but settled for a season-best and second-place finish at the NCAA track and field championships Wednesday in Eugene, Oregon.

Sjostrand, who set the SJSU record in 2023 (13.92m), jumped 13.88 meters, second only to Texas A&M junior Winny Bell (13.96m).

Cal senior Caisa-Marie Lindfors and Stanford junior Alyssa Jones each set personal bests in their events but just missed the medal stand.

Lindfors threw a personal best 62.57 meters in the women’s discus for a fourth-place finish. Ciara Jackson, a senior at Fresno State, set a meet record.

Meanwhile, Jones cleared 1.90 meters in the high jump — also fourth.
