WATSONVILLE >> A sergeant with the Watsonville Police Department is recovering from moderate injuries sustained in a collision with a pickup truck that occurred while on duty Wednesday afternoon, the department reported.
At 4:03 p.m. officers responded to reports of a crash between a Watsonville Police Department motorcycle and a Toyota Tacoma in the area of Airport Boulevard and Holm Road. The Tacoma’s driver was not injured and remained at the scene, but the sergeant — who is not being identified — was hospitalized with minor injuries. He has since been released.
Due to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, the department could not comment on the extent of the sergeant’s injuries other than that they were moderate. Watsonville police spokesperson Michelle Pulido said the sergeant is currently recovering.
The incident remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, which is taking the lead in investigating. Israel Murillo, spokesperson for the CHP’s Santa Cruz area office, said the agency still needs to review physical evidence and statements by the involved parties.
