Macomb Lutheran North’s best seasons have come in the last two, with the Mustangs posting a program-record nine wins and a district title a year ago, then topping that with a 10-win 2024 season that produced a CHSL crown and another district title.
It fits that the anchor of the offensive line that has helped produce nearly 5,000 rush yards in those two seasons combined would be honored on a statewide level.
Lutheran North’s Chris Gottschalk earned second-team offensive lineman honors on the Michigan Sports Writers Division 3-4 All-State football team, which was unveiled on Thursday. The 6-foot-3, 260 pounder played both offensive and defensive tackle for the Mustangs.
He was the only Macomb County player honored in the two divisions.
Zeeland West’s Trey Sloothaak was named the Division 3-4 player of the year after leading the Dux to a 13-1 season and a D3 title, beating Detroit King, 42-22 in the final.
The quarterback in the Dux Wing-T, Sloothaak threw for 490 yards and eight scores and ran for 515 yards and three more scores, adding a team-high 67 tackles from his safety spot, and two interceptions.
