Kenneth John Matheis, lovingly known as “Hank”, passed away peacefully at his home in Waterford, Michigan, surrounded by friends and family on Friday, October 25, 2024, at the age of 88. Born and raised in Passaic, New Jersey, Ken lived a life of profound dedication to his family, community, and country. Ken was a proud graduate of Lodi High School, New Jersey where he met the love of his life, Bernice. Together, they raised three wonderful children in New Jersey before moving to Waterford, Michigan, in 1971, where they built a life and community that they cherished. He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Newark College of Engineering in mechanical and electrical engineering while working and raising a family—a testament to his determination and dedication.

A civic-minded individual from an early age, Ken served as a councilman in the city of East Patterson before relocating to Michigan. His commitment to public service extended throughout his life, and he was deeply involved in Lake Oakland neighborhood events, particularly enjoying the patriotic 4th of July float competitions. A devoted patriot, he personally funded and spearheaded the renovation of the Lake Oakland public beach and facilities, ensuring that neighborhood children had a beautiful and safe place to play. A successful businessman, he owned and operated Hank’s Fly Fishing and was president and owner of The Complete Companies.

His love of the outdoors drew him to golf, fly fishing, and deer hunting in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where he enjoyed the camaraderie of “deer camp” with family and friends. Ken’s generosity extended far beyond his family and friends.

He was a significant supporter of veterans’ organizations, donating time, money, and even his expertise—building several Veteran’s Memorial facilities in Oakland County. His support for veterans and commitment to community earned him the respect and admiration of all who knew him. Ken was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 years, Bernice Claire Matheis (Smith), his brother Joseph Matheis, his parents, and his treasured pets. He leaves behind his children, Patricia (Sean) Maguire, Kenneth (Diane) Matheis, and John (Kristin) Matheis; his grandchildren, Claire (Todd) Addis, Joseph (Maggie) Kubinski, Morganne Matheis, Marie Matheis, Dylan Matheis, and Kaelyn (Ryan) Mantha; and his great-grandchildren, Sadie, Case, Haven, Theodore, Leela, Alma, Duke, and Ella. He is also survived by his sister Karin Tinus, sister-inlaw Terri Matheis. An interment will be held at All Saints Cemetery in Waterford, Michigan. Kenneth’s legacy of love, dedication, and service will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and community.
