MONTEREY >> The SPCA Monterey County is asking the public for help in identifying victims of a Prunedale man who impersonated a veterinarian in north Monterey County.

The man has no license but was providing examinations, prescribing medication and performing invasive procedures in his home, according to a news release sent out by the SPCA. At least one dog died in his care and multiple others required follow-up vet care.

In early November, the SPCA investigators, in conjunction with Monterey County Deputies and District Attorney Investigators, stopped the man’s operations. He had been performing “illegal, unlicensed veterinary procedures” on the 1600 block of Blackie Road in Prunedale, according to the news release.

He had previously worked out of a home on McGowan Drive in Salinas.

On Nov. 4, investigators used a search warrant and found 12 French Bulldogs in small cages with no food or water. Four dogs were kept in a shed with no ventilation or sunlight. A malnourished German Shepard was also found roaming the grounds and a Doberman was found in a small kennel, also with no food or water.

Officers also found two horses on the property. The SPCA took in the 14 dogs and the horses were returned to their owners.

“We’re hoping more victims will come forward,” said Officer Jacob Duarte, humane investigations supervisor. “We want to make sure they are aware that they’re not in trouble for using his services. We want to get their stories … and be able to investigate this more.”

Community members who may have more information about this case or know anyone who may have been victimized by the impersonator are encouraged to reach out to SPCA Humane Investigations Officer Emily Leon at (831) 264-5436. Tips can also be sent in online at www.spcamc.org.
