One of the area’s best track rivalries will come to an end this month, as South Pasadena’s Abigail Errington and La Cañada’s Maya DeBrouwer, two of the best distance runners in San Gabriel Valley history, finish up their high school careers.

Errington, a senior who is headed to Princeton, and DeBrouwer, a senior who is going to Stanford, will square off again Saturday in the CIF Southern Section track and field finals at Moorpark High School.

They are both among the favorites in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters in Division 3. At last week’s preliminaries, they nearly finished in a dead heat in the 3,200, as Errington qualified first in 10 minutes, 43.91 seconds and DeBrouwer clocked 10:43.92. In the 1,600, DeBrouwer qualified second and Errington third.

“They’re good friends, it’s a healthy rivalry,” South Pasadena coach CB Richards said. “They’ve been going back and forth for years. They both pull for each other, but when they get to the final lap, they really compete. It comes down to whoever has it that day.”

Errington won the Rio Hondo League titles in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters, holding off second-place DeBrouwer in both races. In last year’s Division 3 finals, Errington won the 1,600 title in 4:51.40 and finished second in the 3,200. DeBrouwer finished third in each race.

However, at the state championships last year, DeBrouwer finished fourth in a personal best 10:09.23 with Errington sixth in 10:19.40.

So, they’re not only battling each other, they have their sights set on multiple tiles over the next few weeks through Masters and the state championships.

“She (Errington) has a decision to make,” Richards said. “She is debating whether she should run in the 1,600 and 3,200 or just focus on the 3,200. She’s looking at which one she might have her best shot in. The weather could be a deciding factor too. It might rain and should be a lot cooler than it was last weekend, so we will see. It will all be up to her.”

La Serna’s Grant Miller will be chasing tiles in Division 1 boys distance races. Miller has been among the top distance runners all season and qualified third in the 1,600 (4:14.70) and second in the 3,200 (9:26.19).

St. Francis’ Auge Martin is one of the favorites in the 3,200 in Division 3 after qualifying first overall with a time of 9:18.06 at last week’s prelims.

Another distance runner to watch in Division 1 is Arcadia’s Charlotte Hopkins, who qualified third in the 3,200 in 10:55.79.

Most of the San Gabriel Valley’s top competitors are in Division 3.

La Cañada’s Katie McGuiness had a personal-best of 20 feet, 4 inches in the girls long jump to lead after the preliminaries. McGuiness will likely have to hold off Jurupa Valley’s AB Hernandez, a transgender athlete who held the state’s top mark (20-1.5) until McGuiness surpassed it last week.

Wilson junior Jacob Davis is hoping for a top-three medal in the 110 and 300 hurdles. Davis qualified fourth in the 110 hurdles in 14.65 and was third in the 300 hurdles in 39.71

The SGV’s best sprinter, Damien’s Jaxson Gates, ran a 10.64 in the 100 prelims, which was third best overall. He has been among the top-ranked sprinters in the 100 sprinters in the CIF-SS.

South Hills’ Justin Guerriero could medal in the boys triple jump after going 44-1 in the prelims to qualify second.

In the girls 100 hurdles, Covina’s Kaylei Combest and South Pasadena’s Avery Taylor both have shots at top-three finishes. Monrovia’s Isla Terrill qualified second in the 800 in 2:12.50.

Damien’s boys 1,600 relay squad qualified second in 3:18.57.

McGuiness and South Pasadena’s Kayla Boozer were both top-four qualifiers in the girls high jump and Covina’s Sofia Jara qualified second in the triple jump.

DIVISION 2

Bonita’s Daiveon Woodley qualified first in the boys 400 in 48.13, but the favorites are brothers from Culver City, Dontay and Duaine Mayrant, who have run much better times during the season. Duaine Mayant ran 46.19 earlier this season.

Glendora’s Hudson Surprenant is hoping for a top-three medal after qualifying fourth in the girls 400 in 47.19.

Bonita’s Holland Dowdle turned in the fourth-best qualifying time in the 300 hurdles (46.18).

Glendora distance specialist Dylan Flores has been one of area’s best runners. He is among the favorites in the 3,200 after qualifying fourth in 9:23.61. Flores’ personal best this season is 9:02.73.

Walnut’s Daniel Li is hoping for a top-three medal in the boys long jump.

DIVISION 4

Rio Hondo Prep freshman Braeden Yokoyama and La Salle’s Isaac Magluyan are the co-favorites in the boys pole vault. Both had the top qualifying jump of 12-6.

Mayfield’s Maya Whitfield is the top qualifier in the girls long jump after her mark of 17-11 at prelims

Flintridge Prep’s Declan Mansbridge qualified second in the 1,600 (4:22.35). Scarlett Coombes, also from Flintridge Prep, qualified third in the girls 100 (12.14).
