


Granada’s quest for its second consecutive North Coast Section Division I baseball title got off to a positive start on Tuesday as the top-seeded Matadors beat San Ramon Valley 5-2.
The Livermore school had just three hits through the first three innings, but a four-run fifth inning sealed the win. The Matadors (22-5) will host Casa Grande on Friday after the ninth-seeded Petaluma school defeated eighth-seeded Dublin 5-0 in its first-round game.
Alex Piscotty struck out seven and gave up no earned runs in six innings to lead Granada. Adrian Zambrano knocked in two runs for Granada and Chase Nadeau and Estevan Duarte each had an RBI.
SRV finished 15-11.
No. 2 De La Salle 12, No. 15 Pittsburg 5: De La Salle (23-4) jumped out to an 8-0 lead through two innings and didn’t look back. Oklahoma commit Alec Blair went 2 for 2 and knocked in four runs. Senior shortstop Antonio Castro went 3 for 3, drove in two runs and scored three times. The Concord school finished with 13 hits. Pittsburg ended its season 19-6.
No. 3 Foothill 8, No. 14 Liberty 2: Foothill put this one away early, jumping out to an eight-run lead through five innings in a dominant performance at Liberty. Junior Austin Rost and freshman Aiden Tavares each went 2 for 3 and Jack Fowler drove in three runs. Senior Take Sato-Kreis struck out six and allowed one run in six innings. Foothill (20-6) will host No. 6 Benicia on Friday.
No. 5 College Park 4, No. 12 Heritage 3: College Park advanced after an 11-inning battle with Heritage ended in dramatic fashion. With the score tied at 3 and the bases loaded, TJ Reinhart was hit by a pitch, which scored junior Riley Meadows to end the game. Senior James Voorhies struck out nine while allowing three hits and two runs in eight innings. College Park (15-10) will host Clayton Valley on Friday.
No. 13 Clayton Valley 6, No. 4 Windsor 5: The Ugly Eagles returned home from their 80-mile trek to Windsor with a victory in extra innings. In the top of the ninth, junior Jack Campbell broke a 5-5 tie when his RBI single scored Josiah Morris. Pitcher Artur Kleyman closed the game for Clayton Valley (18-7), retiring three consecutive batters. Morris had three RBIs.
SOFTBALL Division II
No. 8 Newark Memorial 9, No. 9 Redwood 0: Freshman Ariana Romo pitched a two-hitter and senior Andrea Tall had a double, a triple and a home run as Newark Memorial rolled past Redwood in the NCS softball playoffs. Newark Memorial (18-4) advances to play at top-seeded Cardinal Newman on Friday. Division III
No. 11 San Leandro 14, No. 6 Moreau Catholic 4: San Leandro scored 12 runs in the fourth to break a 2-2 tie as the Pirates upset Moreau Catholic on the road in a five-inning, 10-run rule result. Jade Orta led the way with four RBIs. San Leandro (19-7) will play No. 3 Arroyo on Saturday.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
No. 1 Archbishop Mitty 3, No. 8 Oak Ridge 0: Mitty was on its heels from the get-go, going down early and having to rally back to retake the lead in its CIF NorCal Division I first-round match. But just in the nick of time, the host Monarchs took care of business. After going down 23-22, the Monarchs buckled down and won the first set 26-24. Mitty saved another 23-22 deficit in the second set, finishing it off with a 3-0 run. And in the third set, Mitty managed a 24-21 lead, lost two match points, then finally finished Oak Ridge off with a crosscourt kill by star hitter William Dryden.
Division III rematch: Who’s ready for Leigh-Branham Part IV? The well-acquainted San Jose rivals will meet for the fourth time this season after both teams took care of business in the opening round. Leigh, the top seed in the Division III bracket, handled a feisty Washington-Fremont bunch with a 25-22, 22-25, 25-18, 25-13 win on its home court. Branham, the No. 4 seed, had no problem with No. 5 Ripon Christian, sweeping the visitors from the San Joaquin Valley 25-22, 25-22, 25-19. The Blossom Valley Athletic League rivals will play tonight at Leigh for a spot in Saturday’s final.
Senior Cooper Smith was an individual standout for Leigh against Washington (13-11) with 25 kills.
No. 4 Los Gatos 3, No. 5 Lincoln-San Francisco 1: Los Gatos took advantage of home court on Tuesday, topping its visitors from the City 22-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-21 in a Division II match. Sean Slover led the Wildcats (20-11) with 14 kills.
No. 3 Oakland Tech 3, No. 6 Albany 2: Oakland Tech outlasted Albany 18-25, 25-14, 24-26, 25-17, 15-13 in an all-East Bay showdown in the Town, advancing to face No. 2 Livingston today in a Division IV semifinal. Senior outside hitter Adam Edlin led Tech (20-12) with 27 kills.
