A motorist fleeing police Saturday night tried to strike a Macomb County Sheriff’s deputy with his vehicle before crashing in a swampy cornfield in Macomb Township, according to deputies.

The chase started when a sheriff’s deputy discovered the license plate on a black Chevy Silverado was not registered to any vehicle.

According to the sheriff’s office, the pursuit began about 6:35 p.m. when a deputy attempted a traffic stop on Hall Road and Gratiot Avenue in Chesterfield Township. Instead of pulling over, the driver of the Silverado took off heading north on Gratiot.

The vehicle continued through a red light at 21 Mile Road at speeds in excess of 70 mph, deputies said.

The fleeing driver then went west on 22 Mile Road, north on Fairchild Road, and into the Fairchild Lake Mobile Home community. From there, he led authorities on a pursuit driving between mobile homes, nearly striking a garage in the process.

At one point, the suspect attempted to strike a deputy who was setting up spike strips in the roadway near the exit of the mobile home park, but missed, officials said.

Deputies said the driver went through a red light at 23 Mile Road with the Silverado nearly striking a passing car.

The pursuit finally came to an end when the Silverado went east on Chapman Road near North Avenue and into the cornfield, where the vehicle became stuck.

Deputies took the driver into custody and requested EMS to check him out for any potential injuries. He was transported to the Macomb County Jail where he is expected to be arraigned sometime today on a variety of charges.

Chesterfield Township officers were in the area but told by a watch commander not engage in the pursuit and to monitor it from a distance.
