


All seventh thorugh 12th grade students in Yolo County are invited to attend “Adulting 101: Life Skills for Teens” hosted by the Woodland Public Library and the Yolo County Office of Education on Saturday, March 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Woodland Community and Senior Center.
Attendees can choose up to four workshops to learn about life skills not typically taught in high school, including how to use tools, how to do basic car maintenance and how to ace an interview.
Adulting 101 kicks off at 9:15 a.m. with a welcome from Teen Advisory Board President Sarah Mandujano, followed by remarks from Yolo County Office of Education Superintendent Garth Lewis.
Breakfast will be available and lunch will be provided by Jersey Mike’s.
Adulting 101 will end with a closing speech from special guest Mychal Threets, who is best known for his inspiring social media presence, where he talks about mental health and the importance of public libraries.
“Last year, I loved learning about car maintenance and productivity skills, and this year I’m excited to learn a lot more new and useful things,” stated Naomi Tamene, a senior at Pioneer High School.

We will also talk about careers in Agriculture and how to take college classes for free when you’re in high school.
Conflict Resolution 101—Yolo Conflict Resolution Center: This session will go through the basics of conflict management, self-reflection, and approaching others with empathy.
How Credit Impacts your Life—Schools First Credit Union: We will discuss what credit is and the importance of using credit wisely. We will also define and understand credit scores, how they are calculated, and the ways credit scores can affect your life. Includes a board game called SCORE with real life scenarios that makes a credit score increase or decrease.
Life After High School: Your Money, Your Future!—Safe Credit Union: Ready to take on the real world? Life After High School is your crash course in adulting! Food Smarts Waste Reduction—CalFresh: We provide this curriculum to teens and young adults for them to learn about SB1383 to reduce food waste at all levels for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving climate change. The curriculum centers on how participants can reduce household food waste, since this is the number one contributor to food waste worldwide. We focus on where to store food in the house (i.e. pantry vs refrigerator), how to make produce last longer, eating seasonal produce, and composting. We provide a healthy recipe sample for taste-testing as well.

College Knowledge—UC Davis Early Academic Outreach Program: Learn several techniques for making buttercream flowers for cupcakes and cakes. You’ll have the opportunity to use multiple piping tips and tools to practice these techniques, as well as the opportunity to create your own design.

Our number one goal is to make sure that we share information that you, the participants, would like to know more about. Our workshop will include topics such as STI facts, practicing safe sex, gender identity and sexuality, boundaries, where/how to get the resources and support you need, and what taking care of our mind/body/soul looks like. We will make space for a Q+A and provide a way to submit questions anonymously for discussion. Evaluating & Achieving Job & Educational Objectives—Barry Curtis: Are you a teen who wants to explore options for where you’d like to go next? Find out what the options in your specific case are — given your interests, backgrounds, and known personal strengths, skills, aptitudes — and what resources are available to help you figure out both your “best” options and how to maximize your likelihood of achieving that option.
College Readiness 101—Woodland Community College: In this workshop, we cover essential study skills and readiness for future college students. We will also discuss independent learning and critical thinking skills that will be important in higher education. Not sure if you are going to college? Hands-on Seeding Workshop—Youth Climate Action Board & Three Sisters Garden: In this session, participants will learn how to plant flowers or spring vegetables, decorate small planters, and take them home to watch their plants grow. The focus will be on the sustainability benefits of growing your own food.
