Al died on June 30 after along illness. He was pre-deceased by his dear wife of 57 years, Sydne Silva, and his sister, Renee Hampton. Survivors include: Four children: Ann Mulbry (Robert), Joseph, Thomas, and Paul (Alejandra); seven grandchildren; Laura, Andrew, Katherine, Patricia, Albert, Joseph and John; nephew Tyler Hampton, and four great-grandchildren.
He was born in San Mateo and attended St. Matthew's, Serra High, and Santa Clara University. Al then entered the US Army. After returning to the states, he met and married Sydne and decided to become a teacher. Al taught economics and history for more than three decades at Cubberley High and Gunn High.
Al was an outstanding athlete and coach for most of his life. He was inducted into the Serra High Hall of Fame in 1995. Al was a lifelong fan of the SF Giants and the 49ers. At the end of his life, he couldn't remember his family, but he would always ask how the Giants were doing.
He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing the greens with family and friends. Al loved music of his era, and he could "cut arug" dancing. He had atremendous sense of humor and enjoyed telling stories about his past.
Reading was a passion, and he loved accumulating knowledge.
As a lifelong Catholic, Al lived his faith and served his parishes volunteering and teaching young people about Jesus Christ. He could always be found helping those whose needs were greater than his own.
A memorial mass will take place on Wed., July 16, at 11:00am at Church of the Resurrection, 725 Cascade Dr., Sunnyvale, CA. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Al's ashes will be interred next to his wife's, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Murphy's, CA.
