Tessa Janecke scored the winner as the United States prevailed in overtime over defending champion Canada 4-3 to win the women’s ice hockey world championship on Sunday.

Janecke struck with 2:54 left in overtime for the Americans to claim the 11th title at the worlds.

Abbey Murphy and Taylor Heise scored a goal and had an assist, and Caroline Harvey also scored for the U.S.

“Shock and awe,” U.S. goalie Gwyneth Philips said after the drama. “I’m ecstatic.”

The U.S. cruised through the tournament, winning the preliminary group with four wins from four, including a 2-1 win over Canada, and eliminating Germany in the quarterfinals and Finland in the semifinals.

The 12-day, 10-nation tournament in the southern Czech city of Ceske Budejovice represented the final major international tune-up before the 2026 Winter Games in Italy.

Finland wins Bronze medal at Worlds >> Finland rallied from three goals down before prevailing in overtime to beat the Czech Republic 4-3 and claim the bronze at the women’s ice hockey world championship for the second straight year.

Jenniina Nylund scored the winner 4:52 into overtime to complete the Finnish comeback.

The Finns also prevailed over the Czechs in a shootout last year.

Baseball

Marlins’ Conine placed on 60-day IL >> Miami Marlins outfielder Griffin Conine was placed on the 60-day injured list after dislocating his left shoulder during an 11-10 loss against the Philadelphia Phillies.The injury occurred in the sixth inning when Conine dove headfirst into second base on an RBI double, his team-leading seventh of the season. He immediately clutched his left arm and left the game with a trainer.

Conine, 27, had emerged as a key contributor in the Marlins’ lineup, leading the team in slugging percentage (.438) and OPS (.790) over 71 plate appearances.

Tennis

Zverev wins BMW Open >> Top-seeded Alexander Zverev beat second-seeded Ben Shelton 6-2, 6-4 to win his third Munich title.

It was the big-serving German player’s first title of the year and 24th overall on the ATP tour. He previously won the clay-court tournament in 2017 and ‘18.

Sabalenka moves into final at Porsche Grand Prix >> Top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka won 7-5, 6-4 against Jasmine Paolini of Italy to set up a clay-court Porsche Grand Prix final against unseeded Jelena Ostapenko.

The No.1-ranked Sabalenka has conserved some energy in the tournament. The 26-year-old Belarussian got a bye through the first round and a walkover in the second.

Sabalenka looked sharp against the fifth-seeded Paolini, last year’s French Open runner-up, breaking her serve six times.

Rune wins Barcelona Open >> Holger Rune upset home-crowd favorite Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets to win the Barcelona Open for his first title since 2023.

Rune defeated the Spaniard 7-6 (6), 6-2 for his first title since winning in Munich two years ago, and fifth overall.

Alcaraz was coming off a nine-match winning streak that included his first Monte Carlo Masters title last weekend. He was searching for his third title of the year and 19th of his career. He won the Barcelona Open in 2022 and 2023.

Soccer

Liverpool move within 1 win of EPL Title >> The Premier League title is so close Liverpool can almost touch it.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s second-half strike against Leicester pushed the Merseyside club to within one more win of a record-equaling 20th English league crown.

It would not even take that if second-placed Arsenal loses to Crystal Palace on Wednesday. But regardless of any other result, Liverpool knows victory against Tottenham at Anfield next Sunday will be enough to seal the title.

Racing

Piastri wins Saudi Arabian GP >> Oscar Piastri went top of the Formula 1 standings with victory at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Piastri started second alongside Max Verstappen and took the lead after Verstappen had to serve a five-second penalty.

Verstappen was penalized for driving off the track when battling for the lead with Piastri at the very first corner.

Hockey

Carolina defeats New Jersey in game one >> Logan Stankoven scored two second-period goals in his first playoff game with Carolina as the Hurricanes beat the New Jersey Devils 4-1 to open their first-round series in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Jalen Chatfield scored a first-period goal for the Hurricanes, who carried a 3-0 lead late into the second period and kept consistent pressure on Devils netminder Jacob Markstrom. Andrei Svechnikov added an empty-net clincher late in the third.

Frederik Andersen finished with 23 saves for Carolina, including a key stop on Timo Meier near the crease midway through the third. The Hurricanes also turned away a Devils power play with about eight minutes left to stay in firm control.

Nico Hischier got New Jersey on the board by taking Jesper Bratt’s cross-ice pass and blasting the puck past Andersen during a 4-on-4 chance.
