New England Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye left Sunday’s game against the New York Jets in the first half with a concussion after an unpenalized helmet-to-helmet hit while he slid to the turf after an 18-yard scramble.
Coach Jerod Mayo said he saw Maye at halftime and “the competitor that he is, obviously he wanted to go back out there and play.”
“But there’s a protocol that he has to go through,” Mayo said. “Can’t wait to get him back.”
Drafted with the third overall pick of the draft, Maye started his third straight game. He scored New England’s first touchdown against the Jets, a 17-yard rush.
He scrambled again near the end of the first quarter when he was hit by New York linebacker Jamien Sherwood. Maye went to the blue medical tent and was replaced by Jacoby Brissett.
The Patriots announced at the start of the second half that Maye was diagnosed with a concussion and would not return.
Maye didn’t lead the Patriots to victory in either of his first two starts of his NFL career, though he did show promise in a turnover-free game in last week’s 32-16 loss to Jacksonville.
Maye was 3 for 6 for 23 yards before leaving.
DIGGS HURTS KNEE: Stefon Diggs left the Houston Texans’ game against Indianapolis with a non-contact knee injury.
Diggs was running a route late in the third quarter and pulled up and grabbed at his right knee before falling to the ground.
He was tended to by trainers and helped to his feet after a couple of minutes. He slowly walked off the field on his own and went straight to the locker room.
Diggs, who is in his first season in Houston after a trade from Buffalo, had five receptions for 81 yards before he was injured.
LOVE EXITS EARLY: Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love left Sunday’s game at Jacksonville with a left groin injury in the third quarter.
Love dropped to the ground near the sideline following a second down throw to Josh Jacobs. Jaguars defensive end Travon Walker bumped Love after the play, but the quarterback had been hobbled most of the game.
Love seemed to tweak his groin on the opening drive of the game. He started favoring his left leg after an incomplete pass. He ended up in the medical tent and had his upper leg wrapped when he came back out.
He wasn’t the same the rest of the day and struggled to move in the pocket. He completed 14 of 22 passes for 196 yards, with an interception — his league-leading ninth of the season.
Malik Willis replaced him.
BROTHER ACT: Sunday’s Philadelphia-Cincinnati game was the first NFL matchup between 24-year-old twin brothers Chase and Sydney Brown.
Chase is a second-year running back for the Bengals. Sydney is a second-year safety for the Eagles. The twins played for the University of Illinois before they were drafted in 2023.
