The injury Shohei Ohtani suffered during Game 2 of the World Series was more serious than the simple partial dislocation announced by the team.

Ohtani also suffered a torn labrum in his left shoulder and underwent surgery to repair the damage on Tuesday. The arthroscopic procedure was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache.

The Dodgers say Ohtani is expected to recover in time for spring training.

Ohtani was injured in the seventh inning of Game 2 when he tried to steal second base and jammed his left shoulder into the ground. He did not miss any time during the World Series, but he was just 1 for 11 with one walk after the injury.

Ohtani is already rehabbing from elbow surgery he had in September 2023. He is expected to resume being a two-way player in 2025 after not pitching in 2024.

Performing only as a DH, Ohtani had a historic season in 2024, hitting 54 home runs and stealing 59 bases for the first 50/50 season in MLB history. He is expected to win his third MVP award when it is announced on Nov. 21.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

It has been a rough few days for Clemson coach Dabo Swinney. First, his 19th-ranked Tigers lost to Louisville on Saturday night, then he was told he couldn’t vote Tuesday at his polling place.

Swinney, whose given name is William, explained that the voting system had locked him out, saying a “William Swinney” had already voted last week. Swinney said it was his oldest son, Will, and not him.

“They done voted me out of the state,” Swinney said. “We’re 6-2 and 5-1 (in the Atlantic Coast Conference), man. They done shipped me off.”

Dabo Swinney had to complete a paper ballot and was told there will be a hearing Friday on the issue.

“I was trying to do my best and be a good citizen and go vote,” he said. “Sometimes doing your best ain’t good enough. You have to keep going though, keep figuring it out.”

Alabama A&M linebacker Medrick Burnett Jr. remains hospitalized after sustaining a head injury during a game.

Burnett was still in the hospital on Tuesday, according to an Alabama A&M spokesman. The school hasn’t disclosed details of the injury Burnett suffered during a collision against Alabama State on Oct. 26.

A fund-raising request on gofundme.com had raised more than $17,000 of a $100,000 goal as of Tuesday, and the school also set up an emergency relief fund. The gofundme goal included money to help the family pay for housing so they could be with him.

“He had several brain bleeds and swelling of the brain,” Burnett’s sister, Dominece, wrote in a post on the page. “He had to have a tube to drain to relieve the pressure, and after 2 days of severe pressure, we had to opt for a craniotomy, which was the last resort to help try to save his life.”

An update on Saturday said Burnett had complications, but didn’t elaborate.

Burnett is a second-year freshman from Lakewood.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Zoe Brooks scored 21 points and Aziaha James posted all but two of her 17 points in the second half to help No. 9 N.C. State open a highly anticipated season with an 80-55 win over visiting East Tennessee State on Tuesday night.

Saniya Rivers and Madison Hayes both had 11 points as the Wolfpack geared up for this weekend’s showdown with top-ranked South Carolina.

Braylyn Milton and reserve Carmen Richardson led East Tennessee State with 12 points apiece. Kendall Folley chipped in 10 points for the Buccaneers, who led by six points late in the first half.

Prior to the game, N.C. State unveiled a Final Four banner recognizing last season’s team.

NO. 14 OHIO STATE 104, CLEVELAND STATE 69: Freshman Kennedy Cambridge scored 31 points in her debut, Cotie McMahon added 17 points and the host Buckeyes opened the season with a victory over the Vikings.

Cambridge is a McDonald’s All-American and the highest ranked recruit in OSU program history at No. 2 overall. She was 12 of 14 from the field and 5 of 5 at the free-throw line. She also had six rebounds, six assists and just two turnovers in 26 minutes.

The Buckeyes went on a 20-3 run in the first quarter to go ahead by double figures for good. Cambridge made her first six field goals, including 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions early in the second quarter for a 19-point lead.

NO. 16 WEST VIRGINIA 85, TOWSON 41: Jordan Harrison scored 18 of her career-high 23 points in the first half, Sydney Shaw added 19 points and the host Mountaineers beat the Tigers to start the second season of coach Mark Kellogg’s tenure with West Viginia.

West Virginia is 23-3 in season openers since the 1999-00 season, including victories in the last 11.

Harrison made six field goals in the first half, while Towson was just 7 of 18 (39%), to help build a 38-25 lead. Shaw, a transfer from Auburn, made a 3-pointer on consecutive possessions midway through the third quarter for a 53-32 lead.

Suspended South Carolina forward Ashlyn Watkins has had the charges against her dismissed, according to online judicial records.

Watkins was charged with assault and kidnapping on Aug. 31. She has been suspended from the women’s college basketball team ever since and did not accompany her teammates to the White House in September to be honored by President Joe Biden for their national championship season.

Court records showed Watkins’ charges were dismissed Nov. 1. There was no immediate word on her suspension.

Watkins was a big factor in South Carolina’s 38-0 national title season. The 6-foot-3 forward led the Southeastern Conference with 91 blocks. She averaged 9.2 points and was second behind WNBA first-round pick Kamilla Cardoso on the team with 7.4 rebounds a game.

A Peruvian amateur soccer player was killed and seven others were injured by a lightning strike during their match in a remote Andean city.

Local authorities in Chilca, a city of about 100,000 residents located 310 kilometers (193 miles) east of Peruvian capital Lima, said José De la Cruz, 39, died after he was hit by lightning during a match between his team Familia Chocca and Juventud Bellavista.

Footage shown live by broadcaster Onda Deportiva, which has been shared widely on social media, showed the referee stopping the match after lightning struck near the pitch. As players were leaving the field, a second bolt hit De la Cruz and threw seven other players to the ground as spectators ran away.
