The Photography Club of Davis will have guest speaker Sam Shaw, who will lead a workshop about two compelling topics. The first, “Twilight Zone and Beyond,” explores the artistry of photography during the captivating hours between sunset and sunrise. The second, “Journey into AI,” offers a concise and engaging introduction to artificial intelligence, delving into what it truly is—and what it is not.
The meeting will take place on Wednesday, April 16, from 7:10 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. in the Blanchard Room of the Davis Library.
Shaw earned an associate’s degree from Merced College, followed by a bachelor of science degree in mathematics with a minor in physics and a master’s degree in mathematics with an emphasis on computer science, both from Stanislaus State.
His passion for photography began in high school, leading him to join the Modesto Camera Club and the Photographic Society of America (PSA) in 1993. He entered the world of international competitions in 1995 and has since achieved over 3,300 acceptances.
An active contributor to the photography community, Shaw lives in Turlock, California, and has been involved with the Modesto and Merced Camera Clubs, the San Joaquin Council, the Gold Rush Chapter, and PSA. In 2010, he founded the Gold Rush International Exhibition, serving as its General Chairman for several years, and has also chaired the San Joaquin International Exhibition.
Shaw has created a wide range of programs on topics including Digital Imaging, Color, Travel, Nature, Photojournalism, and most recently, Artificial Intelligence. These presentations have been showcased at local travel and service groups, camera clubs, the Gold Rush Chapter, Foto-Clave, and the PSA International Conference. His expertise as a photography judge spans county fairs, festivals, camera clubs, camera club councils, and international exhibitions.
In September 2009, the PSA Journal featured Shaw in the “Distinctive Image” article and published two of his articles. His work has graced four magazine covers—three for the PSA Journal and one for the Northwest Public Power Bulletin. Since the PSA 365 project began in December 2014, Shaw has participated daily without missing a single assigned subject. His images may be viewed at https://www.loves-photo.com.
