Pacific Collegiate School senior Addie Payne, who plays basketball and volleyball for the Pumas, committed to Saint Mary’s College of California on her official visit last weekend. She’ll compete on the crew team.

Payne, a 5-foot-10 athlete, has never been in a boat or competed in the sport.

Gaels coaches reached out to Payne after seeing her basketball recruiting profile online. That practice isn’t uncommon. College crew coaches often recruit inexperienced athletes with taller, athletic builds from other sports, like basketball and volleyball, and teach them proper breathing and technique.)

She’ll begin her training once she gets on campus next fall.PCS will hold a signing day ceremony for Payne on Nov. 13 at 3:45 p.m.
