MOSCOW >> Talks between U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday in Russia lasted more than four hours, with no concrete results disclosed, but a Russian spokesman said the U.S. and Russian leaders might speak by phone.

Among the topics discussed at the St. Petersburg meeting was Russia’s war against Ukraine.

According to Interfax, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov did not rule out the possibility of another phone call between Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump following the discussions.

Peskov stated that Witkoff had brought a message from Trump, which Putin listened to. Talks on various aspects of resolving the conflict in Ukraine are ongoing.

The issues are complex and the meeting was a good opportunity to present Russia’s position and concerns, which Witkoff would convey to Trump, Peskov said.

After Witkoff arrived in Russia, Trump increased the pressure, writing on his platform Truth Social: “Russia has to get moving.

“Too many people (sic) ere DYING, thousands a week, in a terrible and senseless war — A war that should have never happened, and wouldn’t have happened, if I were President!!!”

Before meeting Putin, Witkoff had already held talks with Kremlin negotiator Kirill Dmitriyev. Dmitriyev had traveled to Washington for discussions earlier this month. Witkoff had previously visited Russia in February and March, during which he also met with Putin.

Trump was reportedly furious with Putin at the end of March, according to media reports. At the recent NATO foreign ministers’ meeting, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made it clear that Trump would no longer tolerate the delaying tactics of the Russian president.

If a ceasefire is not achieved by the end of the month, Trump could impose additional sanctions on Russia, the U.S. news site Axios reported, citing an anonymous source.

Ukraine has been defending itself against a full-scale Russian invasion for more than three years with Western support. Recently, the United States attempted to mediate a 30-day ceasefire during negotiations. While Kyiv agreed to the proposal, Putin set preconditions for such a truce.
