Oak Fest may be best known for its Fourth of July fireworks but the Oak Forest festival also features lots of live entertainment and family-friendly fun.

The 32nd annual fest from July 3 to 7 includes Community Day activities and a bean-bag tournament July 6 and the 16th annual Car & Bike Show July 7, plus bingo, a carnival, a food tent, a crafters showcase and music performances all days.

“We’re just so excited to be part of the event,” said Ryan Rocky Johnson, drummer and percussionist of July 6 headliner Photograph.

“I just love the sound and overall atmosphere of being outside. We can turn it up and not really have to hold back as much because we don’t have to worry about the ambiance of the room,” he said. “The overall ambiance of being outside, the freedom when we’re on stage, breathing fresh air as we’re going on and just feeling the wind blow — you can’t beat it.”

The music lineup includes Infinity and Kristin Rose Kelly Band July 3; the Flex Group, Dave Schmidt and the Blue Snouts, and the Nitelife Band July 4; Hairbanger’s Ball and Unforgiven July 5; Genevieve with special guest John Craig July 6; and LouderNow, Tricky Mission, and Nick Gonzalez and Gloria July 7.

Photograph makes its Oak Fest debut as part of July 6’s Tribute Night, which is back by demand and also features Van Halen tribute 5184, which covers both the David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar eras, and Motley II, which bills itself as the “No. 1 Motley Crue tribute out of Chicago.”

“Our set will feature an hour and a half of nonstop Def Leppard,” said Johnson, adding that “Love Bites,” “Mirror, Mirror (Look Into My Eyes),” “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” “Too Late for Love” and “Women” are on the list.

“We’re going to be doing early stuff from ‘On Through the Night’ all the way to modern stuff. We do a lot of songs and hits from ‘Hysteria’ and ‘Pyromania.’ We pretty much do all the hits everybody wants to hear. Then we do a bunch of deep cuts. It’s a variety, which is fun to put on for people.”

Johnson joined Photograph, which calls itself “Chicago’s premier Def Leppard experience and tribute to 1970s and 1980s rock music,” in 2017.

The band also features Joe Dokken (lead vocals), Scott Crosby and Rick Spinnato (both guitar and backing vocals) and Frank Masterson (bass and backing vocals), of Joliet.

Photograph has performed three times as part of “Monsters of Mock” at House of Blues Chicago. One of the tribute’s biggest gigs was performing after Jefferson Starship and Survivor in 2017 at Burlington Steamboat Days in Iowa.

“The song I enjoy most playing live would probably be ‘Rocket.’ Not only is it technically challenging but it’s a really fun song to play,” said Johnson, 26, who discovered Def Leppard circa age 7 when he learned to play “Bringin’ on the Heartbreak.”

“We’ve developed our set list by not only the songs on Billboard but the songs that definitely spark the biggest crowd reaction. We’ve always had the motto that we’re putting on a show for the audience so it’s really whatever the audience wants to hear.”
